Populonia Trail-Tour
Description
The parking lot at Golfo di Baratti, which is also popular with tourists, is ideally located for riding the first few metres on the asphalt road towards Populonia. At a small hill, turn left onto a gravel road or ride a few hundred meters to ancient Populonia for the view and then return the same way. Ride uphill at a pleasant gradient for almost 300 meters, the last section to Poggio Grosso on a good trail. On the west side, the first descent leads over a flowing trail called "Poggio Tondo" through the sparse forest almost to the sea. You then follow the coastal path up and down to the south as far as the first houses of Piombino, with uninterrupted views of the sea and the island of Elba. On the last section, the path becomes a road and finally a road.
On a gravel road, you then ride away from Piombino again, gaining a good 200 meters in altitude. A first-class, partly built single trail branches off to the right, which leads to the east side of the hill and ends in a trail designed as an ascent. In this way, you conquer around 100 meters in altitude up to Monte Pecorino. Easy trails take you to the final descent of the tour, which briefly leads steeply through the forest and after a gate onto a meadow. You then reach the starting point at Golfo di Baratti via field paths.

The trail along the sea towards Piombino after the Poggio Tondo descent is no longer an MTB trail!!! We had to push our bikes up again after a short section along the sea and carry them in places!!!! Please remove this section from the tour so that no one else rides down there.
We rode the tour on 11.09.2024. The lower part of the Poggio Tondo down to the sea is no longer used. There are no tire tracks and the path quickly becomes so narrow that you constantly get stuck in the bushes with your handlebars. In the following ascent, we had to shoulder the bike in places, the path is too steep and too washed out. Avoid this section if possible.
We found the last two descents the most fun. On the uphill trail, we old people lacked a bit of strength. This part is certainly more fun if you are fit or have e-assistance.
