Monte Calvi

Monte Calvi Campiglia Marittima Toskana

At the foot of Monte Calvi lies the village of Campiglia Marittima in the hinterland of Piombino and San Vincenzo. In recent years, local mountain bikers have created a varied network of trails here that can be integrated into the tour to the summit of Monte Calvi.

Description

At a parking lot on the outskirts of Campiglia Marittima, you start the mostly moderately steep climb, which first rides over asphalt and then on gravel towards Monte Calvi. Short intermediate descents alternate with equally short, steep sections. At a fork in the forest, you leave the cart track and follow a narrow path uphill. Turning north, the path rides in a left-hand bend around the summit of Monte Calvi. Some sections are covered on foot, overcoming several rocky steps. The view as far as the sea, the island of Elba and, on a clear day, as far as Corsica makes up for the scrambling, a rare privilege in southern Tuscany, as you are otherwise mainly in the dense forests.

The descent shows its crisp side, initially leading quite flat through slightly blocked terrain, but then becoming noticeably steeper. You reach a small square from where several trails created by local mountain bikers start. Buca della Vitella is a fun and mostly flowing trail that rides through the sparse forest; the ground remains rather rocky, which requires you to choose your line with foresight. A short traverse, followed by a counter-climb, leads to the second trail descent. The sometimes wild, fast singletrail ends at an old road that rides southwards along the elevation. A short climb leads to the Sdegnetors trail through a small valley. Jumps, berms and sudden changes of direction require your full attention before you reach a road at a local mining visitor center. Follow the road downhill for a short stretch in the direction of Campiglia Marittima, but soon leave it again to branch off to the left. Via side roads and dirt tracks, you pass a Roman bridge and then reach the starting point below Campiglia Marittima.

Ascent route to Monte Calvi almost overgrown in spring 2025 and therefore not worthwhile. Recommendation: Walk up to the summit from the trailhead mentioned above, worth it for the view.
