Monte d’Alma Enduro
Description
The tour starts in the valley of the village of Pian d'Alma or you can meet up with one of the local shuttle providers. After an entertaining roll-in section, you head up the mountain on a mostly well-maintained gravel road through sparse forests. At the Sughericcio junction, the main part of the ascent is already behind you, followed by a gentle up and down to the start of the Tre Dita trail. On a descent of around 300 meters in altitude, the challenging but smoothly ridden trail offers plenty of variety and is typical of the region. From the grippy forest floor, the trail leads over fun stone fields and through water-washed gullies. At the bottom of the valley, you reach the road familiar from the first ascent, but only follow it for just under two kilometers before taking the gravel road on the right to the Gagliardo Trail. The flowing trail is fun to ride, but at higher speeds it pays to ride with foresight. There are two variants to choose from for the bottom third, both of which are worthwhile, but the one on the right is the more exciting one.
Once again, you reach the familiar gravel road and follow it uphill. Leave the trail entrance of Tre Dita on the left and climb another 150 meters up to Bucca della Neve and further up to Monte d'Alma. You reach the picturesque village of Scarlino via the Criminale Trail, which is crisp in places and peppered with numerous hairpin bends. A short detour to the castle ruins is worth it just for the view. The view extends to the island of Elba, over the village of Follonica and the Maremma plain behind it to Massa Marittima on the next range of hills.
The following climb of just under 300 meters in altitude to just below Buca della Neve is very steep in places, and the gravel road is often a little rough. However, short intermediate descents allow you to catch your breath. Trail 301 begins a few meters below the turning point for shuttles at Buca della Neve. Initially leading over gentle forest ground, the 301 shows its true colors after a short counter-climb. Numerous passages through technically challenging terrain require a certain speed so that gullies and stone fields can be avoided via natural berms.
For the final ascent, the second part of the very steep Aquaviva climb has 250 meters of elevation gain over a good two kilometers. The steepest sections are easy to ride on an e-mountainbike, otherwise pushing the bike is more efficient. The final descent of the tour leads along the Carbonai Trail, a variant of the 301 just ridden. The surface of the trail alternates between forest floor and increasingly rocky sections due to erosion, making for another fun ride. The starting point is then reached via the gravel road leading through the valley.
Tip: The tour can easily be ridden as a shuttle tour, with only a few meters in altitude to conquer under your own steam.Map & GPX-Track

Really cool tour! Beware of the insects, they can be quite unpleasant with these bloodsuckers and spur you on not to stop on the climbs. I did the tour by ebike from the beach and I would say it was quite challenging. So plan enough time and take water with you. There was a small refreshment stand at the castle where I was able to fill up with water and continue the tour after a coffee.
