Schlern (Sciliar)

Schlern

The Sciliar high above the Isarco Valley is a real gem among the Dolomite peaks - and a well-known destination for mountain bikers. The route offers spectacular Dolomite scenery and a challenging and exceptional singletrail descent.

Description

The start to the Schlern tour is easy: the gondola lift takes you from Seis up to the Seiser Alm. You then climb up on small roads, leave the lovely plateau behind you and, after a short descent, fight your way up towards the Mahlknechtjoch. Instead of heading for the pass itself, turn right a little beforehand to reach the very steep ascent to the Tierser Alpl. The gravel road is mercilessly steep, even very well-trained mountain bikers will reach their limits here. As a rule, you push a little here, but then you have earned a break in the extraordinary Rifugio against a fantastic backdrop. That's it for gravel roads, the rest of the tour rides (almost entirely) on single trails. Immediately after the Rifugio, there is a long descent, but then the bike is soon on your shoulders. A wonderful path leads up to the ridge of the Schlern on foot. This carrying passage is the reason why the tour should not be tackled with an e-mountain bike.

On reaching the ridge, the downhill fun begins. The challenging but easy to ride path leads (with a short uphill section) to the Schlernhaus and from there down the steep and winding "Prügelsteig" trail into the Schlembach Gorge. Far down in the gorge, the path is built into the rocks in an unusual way using wooden beaters. All in all, the descent is steep, slippery and challenging - not for beginners! Finally, you reach a gravel road at the exit of the gorge, follow it for a while and a little later turn left onto the trail to Huber Weiher and on to Völser Weiher. The final section back up to Siusi is another wonderful singletrail section - an excellent end to an impressive and challenging Dolomite classic.

Notes:

  • There are wooden signs on the Sciliar that prohibit biking. According to local mountain bikers, these have been there for a long time, are not official and are therefore not observed. The Schlern tour in this variant is one of their standard routes.
  • In summer, take your swimming gear with you. The Völser Weiher offers a great opportunity for refreshment in the cool water.

Beautiful tour but not recommended in mid-July on a Sunday like we did. There is now an official cycling ban at the bathing lake for the transition to the valley station. So it's better to take the wide gravel road and cycle back down on the main road and the following cycle path.

Tour is not recommended, even at off-peak times (departure 16:00) there are still a lot of hikers. As a bike, we don't make ourselves popular, even though there are several no biking signs along the way.

That's true if you're out and about in August. But then there are actually lots of hikers almost everywhere in the Dolomites. From September or even in June, however, there's not much going on here.
