Nufenenpass – Mossmatten-Trail

Mossmatten-Trail (Goms)

The descent from the Nufenen Pass with the additional loop over the Mossmatte is a trail highlight in Goms. Both sections were specially prepared for mountain bikers in 2024.

Description

The tour starts on the Nufenen Pass, which can be easily reached by post bus. The day gets off to a cold start with a singletrail descent right at the top of the pass. The first section was once a bumpy struggle, but the trail has since been renovated for mountain bikers and is now wonderfully rideable with an alpine character. The same applies to the next section to Ladstafel: a newly built, racy bike trail. For those who like it a little more challenging, there is an alternative route a little further to the left, but this requires a road crossing that is closed due to the risk of falling rocks. Both variants lead to the Ladstafel, from where the route becomes faster and smoother and leads through the varied Ägenetal valley.

After the small reservoir, the second part of the tour begins via the Mossmatte. Here you first climb more than 200 vertical meters on a gravel road and then switch to singletrail mode for another 200 vertical meters. This section is easy to ride, but contains occasional sections of pushing. On this trail, you reach a spectacular off-road balcony with a breathtaking view of the high Alps opposite, with the Finsteraarhorn as the central point.

The singletrail descent that follows is sensational: initially interspersed with technical but easily rollable sections, it becomes a true flow paradise once you enter the forest. The trail winds its way down to the valley floor of the Goms. Those who have had enough can roll back to Ulrichen on the cycle paths. The signposted hiking route, which always runs slightly above the valley floor and also includes a few short, tough climbs, offers an additional and crisp challenge.

Conclusion: A fantastic trail tour that was significantly upgraded by the refresh in 2024

Rode the tour today on 7.9.2025. The first part is a bit more technical but still flowy, it all works out. Then meadow trail which is easier and faster. The first part of the ascent is easy to ride, but in the second part (singletrail) we had to push most of it with the biobike. But it was totally worth it: the trail and view on the Mossmatte were magnificent! Tour absolutely recommended!

I rode the tour today - beautiful!
In typical RIDE fashion, the tour description here also understates a bit when it comes to pushing passages - but we're getting to know our secrets ;-)

26.8. tour day; up by post bus at 11:35 am. Great weather. First section brilliant, technical, great fun. Next section to the pass road also very nice. Surfed down the leisurely, chilly meadow trail next to the road. Soon after the suspension bridge, the first 200 m climb is easy to ride in serpentines on a forest/gravel/meadow road. The next 200 m are on the hiking trail, so we had to push. Fantastic panorama at the top. This section downhill to Münster was a dream, varied, technical, forest, hairpin bends, a bit of flow. From Münster back to Oberwald on the cycle path. In the last few days there has always been a headwind : ( We will definitely ride this again.

Hammer tour!
The upper part from the top of the Nufenen Pass was quite nice. Unfortunately, we had little visibility due to drizzle and low clouds and then rode all the way down to Ulrichen. Despite the wet and poor visibility, everything was easy to ride.
The next day, after the Furka Trail, we pedaled back up from Ulrichen itself to the suspension bridge to do the second part to Mossmatte.
This section was really magnificent! The ascent was easy to do (without an E we had to push a lot from Chäller 1879, but it was no problem at all), the view is great and the descent absolutely superb!

GRANDE !
And if you don't catch the post bus or don't want to go all the way up to Gabz, the ascent on the hiking trail from Ulrichen and then directly towards Mosmatte is a tough but worthwhile option. All in all about 2.5 - 3 hours

We rode the e-bike with as much trail as possible to the top of the pass and from then on, this tour is the absolute top hammer with everything a biker's heart desires. With plenty of flow and technical sections, it leaves nothing to be desired. On the ascent to Mossmatten, everything is rideable on an e-bike and then down again on world-class trails. Absolutely recommendable.

I can't write anything about the descent yet, because at the moment I'm writing this comment, I'm at the highest point and waiting for the rest of the group. The first 200m of the ascent are easy to ride. For the second part, bikers without motor support are best prepared to mainly push. It goes well, and at least the panorama at the top makes up for the effort :)

Beautiful trail. Very flowy. Hardly technical except in places at the top. I would do it again.

Rode today, July 6, 2025. Great at the top and the climb towards Mossmatten is also great. The subsequent descent is cool, but from km 16.9 (junction at Mossmattebächli at approx. 1443 m) you have to walk and push. Only temporarily rideable. Can spoil the tour! Dear Ride Team: I would take it out and look for an alternative. Otherwise very beautiful with beautiful nature

Thanks for the input. We have now used the variant via the cycle route on the valley floor as the standard version in the GPX track, but the text still refers to both versions.

Tour ridden on 28.06.2025, very beautiful, but still some snowfields in the upper area. I would not recommend the variant via the hiking trail at the end.

All in all a recommendable tour. There are currently some snowfields at the top. The trail up to the Moosmatte ascent is nice to ride. The subsequent descent to Ulrichen is a boring, flowing trail with little variety. We wouldn't ride it again. But overall a great tour
