Ellmauer Tor
Description
Start in Going am Wilden Kaiser. On the Auweg, the route is initially relaxed on asphalt along the Going stream and steadily uphill to the Wochenbrunneralm. The ascent is pleasant to ride and does not present any major technical difficulties. From the alpine pasture, things get more serious: the route continues on a steeper gravel path in a direct line to the Gaudeamushütte. This is where the rideable section of the tour ends. From here, the carrying part begins - the bike is shouldered over the Kübelkar to the Ellmauer Tor. It is worth memorizing the key sections during the ascent, as the return route is the same. In the Kübelkar, there is a rope-insured crossing to master - alpine experience, surefootedness and a head for heights are essential here. Once you reach the Ellmauer Tor, an impressive rocky backdrop with Dolomite flair and a breathtaking view opens up.
The descent is high alpine and challenging: the trail levels out at difficulty S3 to S4 throughout. Flowing sections are rare and usually only short. The entire line requires maximum concentration, a clean hairpin bend technique, precise braking and perfect bike control. The rope-secured section in the Kübelkar is now crossed down into the valley, followed by a trial-style ride back to the Gaudeamushütte. From there, trail cut-offs lead further downhill - technically similarly challenging, but somewhat easier in sections. Finally, you reach Prama on asphalt, taking a few more trail sections along the way and returning to the starting point in Going.
Note: The Wilder Kaiser is a popular destination for hikers and other mountain sports enthusiasts. The tour should therefore only be undertaken outside of weekends, vacation periods and the peak season. Otherwise, a safe and conflict-free descent is not possible.
Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.
