Gruttenhütte

Gruttenhütte

The Wilder Kaiser in the Tyrolean lowlands impresses with its bizarre rock formations and very technical trails. Outside of the main hiking season, there are interesting bike combinations here.

Description

The tour starts in Going am Wilden Kaiser and initially rides on asphalt towards Ellmau. After a short section through the Wilder Kaiser Golf Club and past the Kaiserbad, the route runs steadily uphill towards Biedringer Alm. From the agricultural area of Biedring, the surface changes to gravel. The trail rides through partially cleared areas and past the Biedringer Alm to the high plateau just before the Riedlhütte. Here you can already enjoy a magnificent panorama of the Tyrolean lowlands.

After the Riedlhütte, the ascent becomes steep, but remains easy to ride on a homogeneous surface. Finally, you reach the Gruttenhütte (1620 meters above sea level), the highest point of the tour. The view is breathtaking: from the Hohe Tauern to the Kitzbüheler Horn, the Loferer Steinberge and the Inntal valley, numerous striking peaks are visible. The upcoming trail descent is also already in view.
The descent

After a few meters of warm-up time, the technical trail begins, which is rated S3 to S4 in difficulty. The trail leads over classic limestone and requires advanced riding technique, especially hairpin bend technique and excellent bike control.

From the wooded area, the descent becomes easier and reaches difficulty levels S2 to S3. The trail finally ends on a forest path that rides to the Gaudeamushütte. A moderately steep uphill takes you to the hut, from where the descent continues in a similar manner. Between S2 and S3, a very selective trail winds its way back to Going.

After a short intermediate ascent on a forest path, you reach the Gildensteig. This begins with a difficulty similar to the previous section, but becomes steadily easier and finally rides into the settlement area of Prama. This is followed by a varied mix of side roads and short trail sections back to the starting point in Going.

Tip: Similar to the Dolomites, the Wilder Kaiser is very popular with mountain sports enthusiasts. The tour should definitely be tackled outside the summer months (July/August) and only during the week to ensure undisturbed ascents and descents.

Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.

There is an official ban on bicycles and mountain bikes in the Wilder Kaiser region. The Gruttenhütte is located within a nature reserve. The ban sign is clearly visible just past the Riedlhütte.
