Le Chamossaire
Description
After the ascent on the cogwheel railroad from Bex to Villars, you climb up the little road towards Col de la Croix under your own steam. A little before the top of the pass, however, turn left and head over to the Col de Bretaye on a gravel road. Now a feat of strength is required up to the summit of Chamossaire. A steep little road and then a path lead past the mountain station of the gondola lift (Roc-d'Orsay) to the summit. If you don't want to do the climb at all, you can also take the cable car up. The descent from the summit leads back to the gondola lift along the ascent route, but then keep right, pass the Col d'Argnaules and follow the ridge to La Truche. Another singletrail rides to Chesières, the starting point of the great singletrail descent to the valley floor of the Rhône valley. It first rides right, then left, then right again and finally left of the Gryonne stream to the second bridge at Les Dévens. From here, you roll along country roads back to the starting point, Bex train station.

Starting in 2025, there will be a bike trail in Villars running from Grand Chamossaire to the Bretaye Station. Yes, it’s another “flow highway,” but it’s fun, and we’re grateful for the trail! To enjoy the descent from Grand Cham to Villars, you’ll need to leave the trail during the last quarter of the ride and take the path for scooters. This path is wide at the beginning but gets narrower and faster later on. This takes you directly to the Roc D’Orsay gondola station, from where you can then take the Maxi Trail all the way to Abbaye. For the adventurers among you, I recommend the trails in Gryon and Les Ecovets: These trails are the reason why biking here is so great!
Efficient ascent and then beautiful views.
First part of the descent
A steep footpath with steps, not great, then very deep from the cows.
From Villars Maxi Avalanche then top.
All in all ok.
I wish I'd listened to QuBöhn. The first part of the descent, which is about 9km, is not really enjoyable. A lot of pushing up and down and when it is rideable, there are what feels like 100 willow barriers. Next time I will join the Maxi Avalanche directly in Villars (signposted). Cool, flowing trail.
The first part from the summit to Villars can actually be avoided, as it involves a lot of pushing and frequent descents. It's better to take one of the other trails here, which are unfortunately only partially signposted. From Villars, follow the "Maxi Avalanche" signs and you'll find a great trail with lots of flow!
