Croix de Javerne

Croix de Javerne

No pain, no gain! If you want to experience the sensational view at the Croix de Javerne and the superb descent down to St-Maurice, you need good leathers and strong calves. But the effort is worth it - the route is a highlight in the Monthey region.

Description

The tour starts at the thermal baths in Lavey. While others treat themselves to a spa treatment here, we get down to business right from the start. The ascent via Morcles up to the Cabane de la Tourche is hard work. Just over 1500 meters in altitude have to be mastered in this way. First on an asphalt road, then after the Chalet des Martinaux on a gravel path. After all, the destination of the ascent is the Cabane La Tourche, which offers refreshments. You can also enjoy the panoramic views as you stop for refreshments: From Mont Blanc over the Dents du Midi to Lake Geneva, the view from up here is exceptional! The hut is the starting point for the long descent towards Bex. This first leads along the ridge path past the Croix de Javerne down to the alp of the same name. A few meters of gravel road are the order of the day before heading onto the super trail to Les Mont de Bex. The trail is steep in places, but first-class riding, sometimes like a bobsleigh run. After the group of houses, there is a recovery phase on a gravel path for a few meters until the last section down to Châtel leads over another trail. Along the Courset stream, you finally descend to Lavey and roll back to the starting point at the thermal baths. Bet that the bathers didn't have such a brilliant day?

Note: At the turn-off just below the Croix de Javerne, you can take the direct route down to Les Monts de Bex on the left. This route is also worthwhile, but much more challenging than the variant via Les Lués.

Tour ridden on 14.07.2024. The steep part of the descent through the forest to is unfortunately not in good condition with some fallen trees, bypass partly tricky.

Otherwise a great tour.

I rode the tour on 29.07.2021. The ascent is constantly quite steep but easily rideable, even if from les Planaux it looks like you have to climb up a vertical rock face. I've been to the Cabane itself several times, but then always rode the "Rionda" downhill (see report, www.ride.ch/touren/rionda). Today, however, it was the Croix de Javerne's turn. The DH is quite flat and flowy at the beginning, even if there are always technical difficulties and I had to get off my bike a few times before Javerne. This is followed by a short counter-climb and a short descent on gravel until it turns back into a trial at Mazot. The trail is quite steep in places but mostly good and fun to ride until the trail ends at Le Chatel. As I hadn't had enough, I rode up via Grande Combe to point 666 and then descended directly to Lavey les Bains via a serpentine trail. An absolute highlight for switchback lovers.
Be careful with the weather forecast: unfortunately, fog often forms in the La Tourche - Portail de Fully area, even if it is beautiful in the rest of the Lower Valais.

I ride a Scott Genius Ultimate and am usually in the head group uphill; downhill I'm always last, by a long way.
