Col du Bastillon

Col du Bastillon

The tour over the Col du Bastillon is located on the well-known route along the Lacs de Fenêtre, and yet the mountain crossing has long received little attention as a mountain bike route. With relatively little effort, you can enjoy a great descent from the Col du Bastillon to Bourg-St-Pierre.

Description

The tour over the Col du Bastillon starts in the same way as the Lacs-de-Fenêtre tour. During the summer months, you can easily reach the Col du Grand Saint Bernard by post bus. From the top of the pass, roll down the road towards Aosta, then turn left before the tunnel onto a trail to reach Alp Baou. From here, the bike rests on your shoulders for 300 meters up to the Fenêtre de Ferret. You then pass the three lakes with views of the Mont Blanc massif. After the third and largest of the Fenêtre lakes, the route rides to the right to the Col du Bastillon. Here you have to climb another 300 meters in altitude, but it is easier than at Fenêtre de Ferret, partly by carrying or pushing. Very fit mountain bikers can even ride certain sections. From the Col du Bastillon at 2754 meters, the descent leads over a narrow but flowing singletrail along the Petit and Grand Lé lakes and on into the Combe de Drône to Saint Pierre, where it becomes a little more blocked and difficult. A forward-looking riding style helps to carry the momentum. Continue on the single trail along the Lac des Toules, then to the end of the tour in Bourg-Saint-Pierre.
