Route des diligences

Route des Diligences

At the point where the cog railroad from Martigny struggles up the wild valley and the Trient stream has carved a deep gorge into the landscape, you will find one of the most extraordinary mountain bike trails with the Route des diligences at the end. The historic stagecoach route winds its way down into the valley with 43 bends.

Description

From Martigny, take the road up to Gueuroz. After the tunnel, turn left and leave motorized traffic behind for the rest of the day. The road is still asphalted as far as La Crettaz and then rides via Litro to the road to Trient. Follow this road downhill for a short distance and take the path that branches off to the right just before a tunnel. This takes you to Le Châtelard, where the ascent to Finhaut begins. A little later, the historic route, which has now been reached, leads to the first miracle of a bend. The gravel road winds its way downhill over 14 hairpin bends to Le Trétien. You then roll along country roads to Salvan, where the second section of the winding route begins. An unbelievable little road rides along over 40 bends to Vernayaz. The bends are so numerous and tight that it is hard to imagine that stagecoaches once traveled to Chamonix here. From Vernayaz, you can take the marked hiking trail back to Martigny.

We are S2 e-mountain bikers and still had to push for about 30 minutes on the ascent on the rooty, stony and partly exposed hiking trail section. The hiking trail above Le Chatelard is not necessarily recommended. Take the path and the road via Troulero; at point 1096, turn left back onto the route. Otherwise, this is a fun, interesting and relatively easy tour.

Beautiful scenic loop. Caution: Between La Crettaz and Planajeur, the bike has to be pushed for almost an hour along the narrow, partly exposed and rooty path
