Miniera di Colonna

Miniera di Colonna (Cogne)

The ore for the famous Cogne steel was once mined in the Miniera di Colonna. What remains are the ruins and the access roads - which are now known as mountain bike routes.

Description

In Cogne, you roll along the country road to Lillaz and then climb up the mountain road, bend by bend. This ascent is familiar to some from the well-known tour to Passo Invergneux (Banzai Trail) - on this variant, however, you branch off to the left below Alp Tzavanis and follow the road towards the historic mines. At Alp Taveronna, the route turns into a singletrail that rides past the ruins into the valley to Alp Tchezeu. There is now a short ascent to master before heading into the sensational final section to Cretaz in Gimilian. The last few meters back to Cogne are along the main road.

A tour with very scenic views. The mine is worth a visit, and the views of Mont Blanc are a sight to behold. The descent from the mine is very steep and covered in coarse gravel. The entire traverse to the beautiful larch forest is interspersed with slopes. Caution is advised here. This is not for people who are afraid of heights or lack sure-footedness. Once you reach the forest, however, it gets really nice again. Overall, a great tour. That said, I’d still definitely recommend the Banzai Trail.

Were there today. Super efficient ascent. Short carrying passage at the mine (20m).
Then a dream trail with technical hairpin bends at the start. The trail is nice and narrow and partly exposed. Really top.
There is hardly any traffic. Quite the opposite of the last section from Torrente Grauson.
From there you notice that the trail is very busy (last section of the Banzaitrail). It is also significantly wider and completely flowy (marble run). The last section to Crétaz is only fast. But it is actually boring to shoot down a 2m wide path (nothing with a "sentationneller final section").

Perhaps the direct descent from Gimilan to Cogne would be more exciting (but unfortunately we didn't try it).

All in all, however, a great tour with top views. Highly recommended.

We have just done the tour with an E- MTbike. The tour is very exposed in parts and there is a rack that you have to carry the bike up. I would like to see who can ride this tour... .
