Mont Avril (Bagnes)
Description
The tour starts in Mauvoisin because you can take the Postauto-Tour bus up to here. The little road now takes you up to the dam wall under your own steam and southwards through the tunnel system. The Schottet road rides alongside the reservoir until the valley finally narrows. You now gain altitude in serpentine mode until you have to walk up to Alp Grand Charmotane. It's 800 meters up to the summit of Mont Avril. The bike can be pushed up to the Fenêtre de Durand, but from then on you have to carry it. The steep slope takes you to the summit - 3347 meters above sea level! Mont Avril is one of the highest points in the Alps that can be reached by mountain bike. And the effort is worth it. The descent rides downhill on the ascent route, a fun and steep gravel surfing experience. The section back to Alp Grand Charmotane and finally to the bridge at Lac Mauvoisin is more flowing. You roll back to Mauvoisin along the gravel road. Instead of taking the post bus back to Le Châble, you now tackle the ride out of the valley under your own steam. The descent starts with a singletrail and you follow the road to the power station at Fionnay, where another singletrail begins just below the dam wall. Follow the hiking signs to Lourtier and then cycle back to Le Châble on country roads. A fabulous 2500 meters of descent have been accumulated in this way.

We rode the tour yesterday. We already needed more time than expected for the ascent to Fenêtre de Durand. The ascent to Mont Avril is very steep, strenuous and again time-consuming. All in all, you should plan enough time for the entire ascent, and the subsequent descent from Mauvoisin to Le Châble is also a long one. It is better to book a post bus earlier in the morning in Le Châble. The view at the summit was magnificent and you are absolutely rewarded for the effort. The trail down was more rideable than I had imagined on the way up. All in all, a wonderful, high alpine tour that demanded a lot from me. Make sure you take enough water with you.
