Monte Cimone – Süd
Description
The starting point is the small village of Tovena with its countless interlocking historic buildings. From here, an impressive military road from the First World War leads up to the Passo San Boldo. Especially at the end, the hairpin bends demonstrate the engineering skill with which the roads were built in the mountains back then. In July and August, during the vacation season, there can be quite a lot of traffic, especially at the traffic lights at the top. At the pass, you leave the main road and wind your way up the eastern slopes of the summit, initially on asphalt or concrete, later on gravel. Finally, you alternate between trail and gravel and reach the summit of Monte Cimone. The summit is not very spectacular and, with a few aerial installations, not really beautiful. The attraction of the tour lies not in the summit happiness but in the downhill fun!
On difficulty S1, occasionally S2, the route heads south past La Cisa and onto the open spaces where the Venetian plains are visible. Magnificent panoramic views as far as the Mediterranean are guaranteed. Continue on the Sentiero heading east. S2 to S3 should be the right grade to enjoy the route. The Sentiero 990 continues in a similar manner until you reach the ascent route of the asphalted military road.
Conclusion: A perfect tour in the foothills of the Alps, but not necessarily in midsummer. High vegetation and high temperatures can make the tour a struggle. However, the descent is particularly enjoyable in fall. Also watch out for snow fields in the northern area (summit area) in spring.
Note: after the pre-summit La Cisa, you can ride your bike up to Monte Torresel to enjoy the view, but you will have to push this section back up to tackle the rest of the tour.Map & GPX-Track
