Monte della Colonna

A little history lesson due? Nothing could be easier than the route to Monte della Colonna near Luino on Lake Maggiore. There are many impressive witnesses to the First and Second World Wars along the route - connected by single trails.

Description

From Luino, the route initially follows the cycle path for 16 kilometers through the Val Travaglia to Cuveglio, where the main ascent begins. This leads along a little-used asphalt road past Monte San Martino to just below Monte della Colonna. The final section up to the summit leads along a single trail, initially rideable but very steep in the last few meters. The bike has to be pushed a short distance here. The summit would be inconspicuous if it weren't riddled with a network of tunnels and trenches. From the summit, follow the trail along the ridge. The first few meters are barely rideable, but the rest is smooth and fun all the way to the small village of San Michele. There is another short ascent (approx. 100 vertical meters) on a gravel road until the descent down to Lake Maggiore on the left. The trail is initially flowy, but not easy to find at times. It is worth following the GPX track closely here. You reach a junction, after which the path widens again, later turning into another singletrail and riding in this mix down to Bedero. Just below the church of Canonica is the final bouquet of singletrails: an excellent trail rides along countless trenches to the outskirts of Germignana. From here, it's just a stone's throw back to Luino.
