Pizzo Pernice

Pizzo Pernice

Monte Pernice is an unspectacular meadow summit near Verbania, but offers a phenomenal Alpine view and a very long and technically demanding single trail descent back to Lake Maggiore.

Description

The tour doesn't start very attractively: you cross the valley floor from Intra to Cambiacca on side roads and then climb seemingly endlessly on the mountain road past Miazzina to the parking lot at Capella Fina above Alpe Pala. Now it gets more exciting - but also more challenging. A steep gravel path continues, which eventually turns into a single trail. You can ride on this in places, but you have to push your bike again and again and even carry it in some places. Finally, you reach the ridge and push your bike the last 100 meters up to the summit. The view from here is simply phenomenal. While Lake Maggiore and the Po Valley can be seen on one side, Monte Rosa and the Valais Alps adorn the horizon opposite. The descent is tricky at first. You follow the trail along the ridge, which is easy to ride without the tall grass. The grass makes the trail difficult to see in places. You reach a saddle, from where the trail is very fun and flowy to ride. After Monte Todum, the whole thing changes again: tight hairpin bends and high drops make the upcoming section a technical challenge, later it becomes smoother again. The section down to Runchio is then extremely attractive. The trail finale to Cossogno awaits. This leads over a rough Roman path, as there are many in the region. Every millimeter of suspension travel is appreciated here. The final section back to Intra is on the access road due to a lack of alternatives.

Ridden today. Very good condition. The last 200m bike n` hike! The high grass takes away the view in places. The section after Monte Todum is very technical but a good place to practise your riding technique. Thanks Ride

The last 100 meters are more like 50 meters to push. However, before that (1h before the finish) there are always running passages. Descent very overgrown with approx. 2m high rides. Therefore ground not always visible.
