Monte Carza

Monte Carza

Thanks to military positions from the world wars, there are some wonderful panoramic peaks on Lake Maggiore that can be reached by bike. These include Monte Carza above Cannobio, which can be combined with an additional loop via Monte Spalavera.

Description

The start of the route rides for six kilometers from Cannobio along the lakeside road to Cannero. In the village, turn right onto the mountain road to Trarego and quickly gain altitude. The view down to Lake Maggiore improves with every meter. Eventually you reach the mountain village of Trarego and from here take a concrete road up to the mountain road that you left before the village. The ascent is still not finished and you follow the little road up to Il Colle. Now it's time for the feat of strength up to Monte Spalavera. The military road and later a single trail are easy to ride and lead to the summit with fantastic views towards Lake Maggiore and across to the Valle Grande. After the summit rest, the first singletrail descent awaits, initially crisp with a few hairpin bends, then increasingly smooth and finally a gravel path down to the end of the concrete road of the ascent. Here follows another section of descent - to the culmination point on the little road, then via a gravel path and finally on a singletrail up to Monte Pian Bello. This is the starting point for the long descent to Cannobio, which first rides on a wonderful singletrail along the ridge and with a short counter-climb up to Monte Carzo. This section offers excellent views down to Lake Maggiore. A varied singletrail then leads down to Viggiona, from where you return to Cannobio on a Roman path.

Tips:

  • If the route is too long for you, skip Monte Spalavera and head straight up to Monte Carzo from the ascent.
  • For riders with very good technique, take the singletrail from Monte Carzo via Prato Rotondo down to Cannobio. Caution: This trail is very demanding.

Rode today, New Cannobio downhill from Monte Carza is very fun, sometimes the trail is a little hard to see.

I agree with DannyF: with the "new cannobio" descent from Monte Carza, this is a great tour. The first 50 meters down from Monte Spalavera are now (newly) designed as a steep staircase of log steps. We had to push here. But the rest of the descent from Spalavera is pico bello. All in all, the Spalavera loop is also recommendable. If the parking lots in Cannobio are overcrowded, there are a few (less frequented during our visit) parking lots along the Cannobio-Cannero road as a start/finish.

We rode the tour today. The view from
Monte Spalavera is fantastic, and the single trail in S1 that follows is also nice to ride. There is also a very nice forest trail down from Monte Pian Bello. After the ascent to Monte Carzo, a beautifully shaped trail leads directly from the summit (cross) in a north-easterly direction through the forest down to Cannobio (can be found on Trailforks under "New Cannobio"). The local trail builders have created a real masterpiece with this trail. Great curves, nice and flowy with a few tech sections (S2), the trail rides endlessly through the forest. This makes the tour an absolute highlight. If you come from Locarno, you can also take the ferry back from Cannobio in the evening.

Hello, there is an alternative trail that goes south-east from the Il Colle junction to the village of Oggiogno...

since nobody has commented on this tour yet, i feel obliged to warn other people about this tour, because it really leaves a lot to be desired and i wouldn't recommend it to my worst enemy!!! the only part of the trail that is even remotely worthwhile is an admittedly beautiful singletrail section after monte pian bello. the fun is over pretty quickly (after about 10 minutes) and the rest of the tour you can let yourself be shaken down into the valley on 2m wide mulatierras - if you like it. the whole trail part down from monte spalavera is just a mega wide path with scree and lots of foliage, you can save yourself the loop. the view on monte spalavera is very nice though. next time i would just ride the same way up to monte spalavera and back down again. all in all, the tour up the mountain is quite a slog. it would be ok if at least the trail was worth it, but i think - no.
