Punta dell'Orto

Punta dell'Orto (Lago d'Iseo)

Lots of panoramic views and even more trails - that is the core character of the tour to Punta dell'Orto high above Lago d'Iseo. An exciting tour over the eastern mountain range of the little-known lake.

Description

In Sulzano, a small town on the shores of Lake Iseo, it's time to get on the saddle. On an asphalt road with a pleasant gradient, you crank up the slightly more than 700 meters in altitude to the crossing below the Chiesa di Santa Maria del Giogo. If you want to make a detour up to the church on the Giopfel, it is best to do this on foot. There is a trattoria at the crossing, but the focus is on the descent. A first-class trail now leads downhill towards Val Trompia - flowy, agile and varied in the S2 segment. This is how you reach the road to the Passo dei Tre Termini. Climb up along this road, pass the village of Polaveno and turn right up to the Valico di Caposs pass. Immediately before the top of the pass, keep left and climb up to Punta dell'Orta on a singletrail. The path is steep, but if you are really fit or have motor support, you can ride up to the summit, most people push here. The effort is worth it. Firstly because of the wonderful view at the summit, but also because of the long singletrail descent.

This second downhill trail of the day starts at the summit cross and is initially technical, but then quickly becomes more flowy. In this way, you arrow through the forest, the level is in the S2 range with S3 sections. You then descend to the vicinity of the San Fermo church. If you don't turn right here, you will end up on a bumpy chapel path, which is rideable but has limited fun potential. It is much better to keep right here and take the wonderful singletrail right up to the first houses in Sulzano. The last few meters are still asphalted to then cool off at and in the lake.

The first uphill section in a low gear is easy enough. The first downhill trail is very overgrown and (was) blocked by tree trunks; the thorns are a problem if you’re wearing shorts. We skipped the second climb and went straight down the hill to the lake via Strada Roma. It would be a nice trail once it’s cleared.

Both trails partly unrideable after rain. Not very scenic, mostly like in the jungle. You don't have to ride it.

Tour ridden on 16.6.2023:
To ride the entire trail up to Punta del Orto, you have to be world champion fit & technically an uphill rocket. The DH at the start is quite nice. After that, some rather bumpy, rough sections. Can confirm the comment from jonas.buechler_48955. The last (red) trail (junction just before the Chiesa di San Fermo) is not quite as wonderful as described. It has some short uphills with pushing passages, at the moment still some fallen trees. There is also a short climbing section down with ropes at the highway tunnel.

The last section, which branches off to the right near the church of San Fermo, is unfortunately no longer passable. The singletrack trail was probably affected by storms some time ago. Numerous fallen trees lie across the trail, some very large stones have also been washed into the path and the trail is already very overgrown in certain places. Unfortunately, the fun potential in this section falls by the wayside. We did not try the chapel trail. It is probably in better condition these days. The rest of the trail is highly recommended, but should be tackled early in the morning as it gets very hot in summer.
