Winklerner Hütte
Description
The tour begins just south of Lienz near Dölsach. From here, the route follows paved roads with moderate gradients toward the hamlet of Stronach and then continues across to the Grossglockner Road. You then join the access road toward the Roaner Alm or the Winklerner Hütte and pedal entirely on gravel through partly forested and partly open terrain, steadily uphill until you reach the highest point of the tour at the Winklerner Hütte. The hut is staffed and is known in summer for its very hospitable hosts and excellent food.
The descent toward Winklern in the Mölltal begins right at the hut. It alternates between S2 and, in some spots, S3 difficulty levels with moderate to steep gradients on the Direttissima along the forest road toward Penzelberg. From Penzelberg, you then cross the paved road toward the Iselsberg Pass. At the Iselsberg Pass, you turn onto the next trail shortcut toward Iselsberg. This section rides extremely smoothly and is almost perfectly laid out toward the Grossglockner Road. You’ll ride along this road for a short while—be sure to watch out for traffic—before turning onto the next trail section, rated S2 and occasionally S3, which eventually brings you back to the tour’s starting point.
Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.
