Böses Weibele

Böses Weibele

The Böses Weibele summit near Lienz in East Tyrol is a combination of high alpine mountain biking with flowing mule tracks and a high proportion of official bike park trails.

Description

The starting point of the tour is the parking lot at Schoss Bruck. From here, you pedal relaxed along the cycle path past Leisach and then steadily uphill along the Pustertaler Höhenstrasse to Bannberg (1262 meters above sea level). The ascent up to here is already a highlight, spoiling you with the finest panoramic views. The Lienz Dolomites show themselves from their best side here. In Bannberg, you then take the toll road through pine forests to the Hochsteinhütte (2023 meters above sea level). The Hochsteinhütte is situated above the vegetation line and offers views from the Hohe Tauern to Carinthia and the Dolomites. At the Hochsteinhütte, you will be greeted by no cycling signs as you continue to Hochstein. Here it is up to the individual to decide whether to continue on the bike or not. The route to the summit takes you steadily uphill on the 321 trail. There are not really many key sections to master on the uphill and the bike can also be pedaled in places. E-bikers in particular have the edge here. At the summit  the panorama and view are hard to beat in good weather and with good visibility. All in all, one of the best mountains in the entire region

The descent is also in the top league. Between difficulty levels S1 and S2, in places S3, it leads from the summit via Hochstein back to the Hochsteinhütte. There are a few hairpin bends and rougher sections to master, especially in the upper section, but the rest is alpine flow. From the Hochsteinhütte, the route then continues on the 321 trail, the so-called "Russen-Weg", to the Moosalm (difficulty S1 and S2). A particularly epic section awaits just before Edenwald, as the heavy windthrow in 2018 cleared large areas of forest and now offers a magnificent view. From the Moosalm, you can then choose whether to take the "Peter Sagan Trail" or the "Lakata Trail" and ride it back to Lienz on difficulty levels S1 to S2 in typical bike park style with berms and jumps, before taking the small Schloss Bruck Trail back to the starting point.

Notes:

  • The mountain has a high frequency of hikers. The tour should therefore be tackled outside of the cable car opening times.
  • You could shuttle up to a little below the Hochsteinhütte.

Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.
