Lumino-Trails

Singletrail Tessin

The small gondola lift near Lumino is a gem for mountain bikers. Not because of itself, but because three first-class single trails, some of the best in the Bellinzona region, ride down from the Monte di Saurù mountain station.

Description

Descent number one is as trivial as it is fun: it leads directly from the mountain station down to Lumino - a fast, flowing single trail with easy to ride serpentine bends. The 1000-metre descent is the warm-up of the day and a foretaste of descent number two. This leads down the western side of the ridge to Castione. As far as Cauri, the route follows the original access path to Alp Pozzuolo - a fast and fairly wide singletrail, but with a few tricky sections along the way. Now it's time for the steep trail descent to Claro, from where you ride back to Lumino on cycle paths, where mountain railway ride number three awaits you.

The last of the three descents is the crispest and must first be earned with a walk. 350 meters of elevation gain from Monte di Saurù (mountain station) to Alpe Domàs, where a first-class and above all rooty singletrail then rides to Monti dei Maruso. From here, the focus is no longer on roots but all the more on stones: the section from Monti di Maruso past the Santa Maria monastery down to Claro is a rough and challenging singletrail, but good to ride and always with tricky hairpin bends. The final section is the most challenging part of this very rewarding singletrail trilogy from Lumino.

Note: The great trail between Cauri and Castione, an old path that has been cleaned up by local mountain bikers, has been barricaded by local rustico owners and the path has been disrupted for the first time.

Tip for the mountain railroad from Lumino

A maximum of two bikes can be taken on each ride. However, it will ride several times if necessary. Important: Remove the front wheel before hanging up and hang up the bikes by the fork with the thru-axle screwed in, otherwise the handlebars could get jammed at the intermediate station. The cable car ride up costs 15 francs including bike transport. www.funivia-pizzodiclaro.ch

Did number 3 on Oct. 5. The uphill (3km, 350m) from the mountain station to Alpe Domas is unrideable apart from a few dozen meters, i.e. pushing the bike or shouldering it in places. The descent is mostly unrideable for us because it's quite bumpy with lots of loose ground/stone blocks.

Did number 2 today. A lot of things were unrideable for us. Quite heavily blocked. Possibly only rideable for absolute technicians.

Did the tour (1st and 3rd departure) on 12.9.2024.
Conditions were good. Almost all trees cleared.
Descent parallel to the track is easy. Last descent of the tour is challenging, but very good.

We have updated the tour and replaced the trail from Cauri to Castione because it was barricaded and disrupted by local rustico owners.

We tackled trail no. 3 on June 2, 24. The walk towards Alpe Domàs is very varied and entertaining. The storm damage is still visible and some passages over trees are challenging on a bike.
The first part of the descent is quite wild, starting with lots of roots under the leaves and loose branches. After the first steep section, you come to a part with a lot of storm wood. This means that hiking, carrying your bike and passing trees is the order of the day. Unfortunately, there is no flow in these conditions until Monti di Maruso. From here to Monastero di Santa Maria, it becomes blocked and peppered with loose rock. This makes this section very challenging and demanding.
If you want to experience a bike adventure in beautiful natural surroundings, without the need for consistently rideable trails, this is the right place for you. Otherwise, Ticino offers a number of challenging and consistently rideable alternatives.

keep on riding

Unfortunately, the trail is completely destroyed. No longer rideable. But there is a new trail directly to Claro. Cheers

It would be great if you could adapt this tour: Departure 2 goes from Cavri, Capelle d'Franch, steeply down via Cascinello to Claro. The trail is signalized, the original version is closed. I don't recommend the trail because it is very blocky, steep and full of foliage. The train now transports 3 bikes at a time. A day ticket including lunch at the mountain station costs 45.

Trail 2 is an illegal trail! Much of the trail is not on the national map or cadastral plans, so it can't even be considered a trail. The posting on Ride and the resulting increase in crossings has led to complaints from residents about a water main break. It is likely that it will soon be banned by the municipality through an official sign. In order to maintain good relations with local residents, users are asked not to use this path. Thank you for your cooperation, M. Regusci / TicinoSentieri

Currently, not only everything has to be walked for Trail 3. There are also a lot of big trees in the way. There are a lot of loose stones on the descent. We would have been better off doing Trail 2 three times.

Lots of fallen timber and snow in places on descent 3.

We rode the route on 23.05.2020. Due to Corona we couldn't count on the train. The ascent to Cauri went quite well, but from then on it was mostly pushing/carrying for the next 550hm. But the effort was worth it, the descent no. 1 is really extra class as described in the report. It's very flowy but still neither boring nor too easy, and I also had to loosen my wrists a bit several times. Route 2 I only know the upper part, and even that only uphill (we hiked up there). But I wouldn't have enjoyed this section downhill either.
I ride a Scott Genius Ultimate and am usually in the head group uphill; downhill I'm always the last one by a long way.

Attention: Route 2 (Cavri-Castione section) is to be avoided!!! Local rustico owners keep putting obstacles on the trail between Cavri and Cave di Castione: the descent can be dangerous!

Route 2 is not recommended: Good trail from Savoru to Cavri, sometimes flowy, sometimes technical. But between Cavri and Monte de Moliègh, someone has put a lot of effort into placing hundreds of stones, branches and half trees in the trail. There is no flow here. From Monte die Moliègh, the trail is clear again, but then ends abruptly in front of a rockslide that has buried the path. The rockfall can be avoided by using a rope over a steep slope. Further down, however, the fall zone has to be crossed twice more. So it's better to ride down from Cavri to Claro.
Otherwise a nice area, adventurous route, beautiful views, good trails.

We did the third tour. Challenging in terms of riding technique, but absolutely super cool to ride. The lift can now transport three bikes (with the front wheel removed).

We are planning to do this tour at the weekend. I've seen a video of the cable car with the front wheels of the bikes in it. Don't want to cause a crash of course. Do you have to effectively remove the front wheel?

The reason why the front wheel is removed: The handlebars are too wide and could jam when entering the mountain station. That's why the bike is suspended from the front fork with the axle screwed in so that the handlebars can be turned off.

Route 2: there was a rockfall at the bottom. Cannot be bypassed and may be dangerous to pass, as more stones/rocks could possibly fall down. Ps The spoilsports have gone full throttle again and laid numerous logs etc. across... We have partially cleared it again.

Route 2: we have opted for an evening tour on route 2. There is no train ride at 17:00 on Saturdays. But a quick call to the number on the notice board was enough and we were still able to go up. 15 per person. Unfortunately, we had a very bad experience on route 2! Up to Parusciana everything was wonderful. Watch out for 1-2 turn-offs. On the old path to Castione, someone (a*****loch) had maliciously placed what felt like 100 trees and branches in the trail. We couldn't ride 50m without getting off and cleaning up the trail!!! Too bad. There are some tricky pushy passages or very steep sections in between.

We cleared all the branches and tree trunks out of the way on Sunday morning (13.10.). When we reached Moliegh, we were met by an extremely bad-tempered couple. The two are probably always in their cottage at the weekend and are responsible for blocking the trail. After a heated exchange of words, we were able to escape, as the very resolute lady stood in front of us with hiking poles and the older gentleman threatened to call the police. So de-escalation is the order of the day here! Stay calm and nice...which is not easy.

Route 2: "The highlight is the section between Cavri and Castione - an old path that has been cleaned up by local mountain bikers.": Does this perhaps mean Cavri - Brogo or Cavri - Cassero? I don't see Cavri - Castione on any map. From Cavri towards Castioni, the path gets lost before Etri. Only shortly before Pioda Nera are there traces of the path again, which get lost again briefly before you reach the little road on the north side of the Streinbruch.

So do you drive the whole day? 15.- per ride
