Oberrothorn

Tufterchumme (Zermatt)

3414 meters above sea level - the Oberrothorn near Zermatt is one of the most spectacular 3000-metre peaks for mountain bikers and relatively easy to reach. The gondola takes you up the Unterrothorn for most of the ascent, and the singletrail descent to Täsch is a 2000-metre descent spectacle.

Description

The trail starts at the gondola mountain station on the Unterrothorn in Zermatt, 3104 meters above sea level. The first part is a downhill run to Furggji, followed by the path up to the summit of the Unterrothorn. There are 433 meters of altitude to overcome, the bike has to be carried or pushed here. But it's worth it for the summit experience alone. The Allalinhorn behind you, Monte Rosa to your left, the Matterhorn opposite and the Weisshorn high above the Mattertal valley to your right. Sensational! Just like the descent. The initially tricky and alpine trail becomes increasingly flowy and downright flowy through the Tufterchumme. Finally, you turn onto the spectacular Europaweg high-level trail and follow it up to the ridge high above Täsch. Now turn left into the forest - fast, winding, fun, tricky - it's all there. The path winds its way down to Täsch, from where you can take the train back to Zermatt.

I rode the "forbidden" path three times this year (in summer in the high season and in October in the hiking season). I never encountered a single hiker. So much for the meaningfulness of the ban. In addition, the signs are not standardized prohibition signs that a municipality would normally put up. It is therefore questionable how official this ban is at all.

Unfortunately I have to agree with scratch_a. The route directly to Täsch is a no-go for bikers.
Continue on the Europaweg and then down from there (+1km ~100m). However, the hiking trail around is super blocked from 1/3 of the way and simply not rideable.

I rode the trail down to Täsch a week ago in high season (forbidden) because another route was closed due to logging work. Number of hikers encountered on this section: Zero. In the absolute high season. Also says a lot about this ban...

Leaving the Europaweg "prematurely" on the route as suggested here is prohibited by bike. There is (as of 24.08.2022) a prohibition sign!
