Rothorn - Tufteren

The Unterrothorn is one of the highest places in the Alps that can be reached by mountain bike. The singletrail descent over the Tufterenalp is legendary.

Description

The ascent to the Unterrothorn is preferably by cable car, but can also be done under your own steam via Sunnegga and Blauherd. However, this requires a good level of fitness, as the ascent is a steep 1500 meters in altitude. The descent then leads through the Tufterchumme on a flowing trail to Tufterenalp. As the continuation of the trail from here is prohibited for mountain bikers, you ride 250 meters downhill on the alpine road. Before the trail continues towards Ried after a right-hand bend, take the singletrail to the Winkelmatten part of Zermatt. The ban is due to the fact that there are a lot of hikers here and mountain bikers need to be particularly considerate or should only ride early in the morning, in the evening or during the low season.
