Zermatt-Umrundung

Matterhorn

Zermatt has plenty of singletrail highlights to offer. Almost all of them can be reached by one of the many mountain railroads. On the Zermatt circuit, you can do without the lifts and combine the highlights into a "real" mountain bike tour.

Description

The tour begins with the ascent to Tufterenalp, from where it continues to Sunnegga. The first ascent is complete, and the route now takes you to the idyllic Mosjesee lake on a flowing panoramic trail and immediately onto the next ascent. This time up to Riffelalp, where one of the best trails in Zermatt starts at the cable car station. The trail rides down to Findelbach station and is a world-class super trail. Watch out, there are always plenty of hikers on the trail. Eventually you reach the little road below Findelbach station, which you follow uphill to Furi and then continue up through the valley towards Schönbielhütte. At a small weir at the bottom of the huge scree field, you reach the summit and start the descent back to Zermatt. To do this, change sides of the valley and follow the south-facing slopes to Chalbermatten and Zmutt. This route is another flow bomb! After Zmutt, stay on the upper trail and follow it to the center of Zermatt.

Rode the tour (or the first part to Findelbach) on 27.07.2023. The ascent to Sunnegga is easy to ride, as is the following DH to Mosjesee, except for a few blocked sections. From there, there is an ultra-steep ramp up to Gant, which can be mastered with the right gravel in the saddle. After that, the ride is quite unspectacular (panorama excluded) to Riffelalp. From Riffelalp to the train station, the trail is quite easy, but then becomes more difficult after the train crossing. Technical passages follow again and again, not all of which I was able to ride (but in principle would be rideable). Despite everything, the trail is quite fun and recommended. However, there were many hikers in oncoming traffic, so there was never any real flow. It is therefore better to avoid this trail in the high season. As we still wanted to ride the Europaweg, we broke off the tour at Findelbach, but I have already ridden the 2nd part and can highly recommend it.
I ride a Scott Genius Ultimate and am usually in the head group uphill; downhill I'm always the last, by a long way.

Status 5.7.2019:
The trail from Riffelalp to Zermatt is closed. There is a ban for hikers at the start of the trail (but not for bikers, which is why this didn't stop us). Nevertheless, bikers should not ride the trail either. The reason, which is not obvious at the start of the trail, is a part of the trail in a ravine that has been washed away. Carrying the bike (especially an e-MTB) across is very difficult, although fortunately not very dangerous as it is not extremely steep.
