Trockener Steg – Schwarzsee

Trockener Steg (Zermatt)

The Trockene Steg has developed into a high-alpine gem among the Zermatt trails. In combination with the Schwarzsee, the route is a challenging enduro highlight.

Description

The tour starts at the Trockene Steg, which can be reached by gondola from Zermatt halfway to the Klein Matterhorn. The descent begins right at the mountain station, initially harmless on an easy single trail. After a short time, the terrain becomes rockier and you look for the best line over the polished rock formations. This section is a high alpine highlight for technically skilled mountain bikers! The path eventually turns into meadowier terrain and becomes much smoother. In addition, with the Matterhorn as a backdrop, one photo spot follows another. At Furgg, there are two options: either climb up the gravel road to Schwarzsee (especially useful if the gondola is not running) or continue downhill on the trail. The descent to Furi is very demanding and, after crossing the ski slope, leads through very steep terrain and is not rideable throughout. Things only become smoother once you reach the tree line. This is how you reach Furi and gondola up to Schwarzsee.

The second part of the tour begins in Schwarzsee. Here, too, there are two options: Either you roll downhill on the gravel road and take the Hobbit Trail to Stafelalp or you climb up again towards Hörnlihütte. Here you have to carry your bike up to the prominent ridge directly below the Matterhorn-Hörnligrat. The descent to Stafelalp begins on the right - a steep, gravelly but rideable little trail with the north face of the Matterhorn behind you.

At Stafelalp, you roll up the valley for a short distance before switching sides and jetting down the legendary Z'Mutt Trail on the left side of the valley to Zermatt. This final section is a MTB highlight in Zermatt - much smoother than the sections before, but with the occasional short uphill section.
