Pointe de l'Aval

Pointe de l'Aval

The Pointe de l'Aval in Haute-Provence is one of those mountains that seem unachievable on a mountain bike - but then unexpectedly turn into a highlight. The summit lies high above the Refuge de Chambreyon and appeals to all those who like steep and high-alpine routes.

Description

The starting point of the tour is the pretty village of Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye on the Col de Vars. From here, you roll along the little road to Serenne and then climb up to Fouillouse. Here the route turns into a singletrail, which is a little steep at first but then rides at a moderate gradient to the Refuge de Chambeyron. You only have to carry your bike in a few places, and you can even ride uphill on the trail in between. From the hut, you can look up to the summit of the Pointe de l'Aval and contemplate your plan. But a plan is a plan, and although the ascent proves to be gravelly and very steep, it is easily doable. You climb just over 600 meters in altitude from the hut to the summit with your bike on your shoulders. The reward is a wonderful view over the lake landscape at the foot of the Tête de la Fréma. The subsequent descent rides almost as far as Fouillouse on the ascent route. Up to the refuge, the path is steep but easy to ride. A little above the village, however, you ride straight ahead on a left-hand serpentine and take the singletrail down to the banks of the Ubaye. From here, you return to the starting point along the valley floor.

Tip: Combine the tour with the Tête de la Fréma and spend the night at the Refuge de Chambeyron.
