Tête de la Fréma

Tête de la Fréma

The 3151-metre-high Tête de la Fréma is the southernmost three-thousand-metre peak in the Alps that can be tackled on a mountain bike - and also one of the most attractive. It is located on the border between Haute-Provence in France and Piedmont in Italy and offers a first-class backdrop and a top descent.

Description

The starting point of the tour is the pretty village of Saint-Paul-sur-Ubaye on the Col de Vars. From here, you roll along the little road to Serenne and then climb up to Fouillouse. Here the route turns into a singletrail, which is a little steep at first but then rides at a moderate gradient to the Refuge de Chambeyron. The bike only has to be carried in a few places, and you can even ride uphill on the trail in between. After the refuge, the terrain becomes somewhat rougher, but the path is and remains well maintained. Only after the lake of nine colors (Lac des Neuf Couleurs) does the path climb steeply, but here you are already on the summit ascent. It is 300 meters in altitude from the lake to the summit with its magnificent view. The subsequent descent leads almost as far as Fouillouse on the ascent route. A little above the village, however, you ride straight on at a left-hand hairpin bend and take the singletrail down to the banks of the Ubaye. From here, you return to the starting point along the valley floor.

Tip: Spend the night at the Refuge de Chambeyron and climb the Tête de la Fréma at sunrise in the morning.

We rode the tour on 3.8.2024. The tour is beautifully alpine and corresponds to the description.
The ascent to the summit is not for everyone, I left my bike at the col and climbed up on foot, my friend humped the bike and rode down.
The rest of the descent is really nice and fun.
