Starijski Vrh

 Starijski Vrh (Kobarid)

The Stoll foothills on Starijski Vrh offer a varied, but also very challenging trail descent to Kobarid.

Description

The starting point of the tour is on the north side of the Stoll massif near Trnovo ob Soči. From here, take a small fork in the forest road uphill to the saddle with the clearing, where the trail heads south directly down to Staroselo. Here, however, you don't take this route, but cross the ridge past Starijski Vrh, the highest point of the tour, and then take the trail towards Kobarid. The descent varies in difficulty between S3 and S4 and is a trail that should not be underestimated and requires concentration and body tension. The dry foliage in combination with the limestone in particular demands that you take your foot off the pedal at the slightest mistake. In this manner, you circle along the summit of Baba and finally find yourself back in Kobarid. There is another climb up to the monument above Kobarid and then a fairly flowing trail to the main road. Cross this and use the feeder road to Kamp Lazar. Past Kamp Lazar, you then take a small side road, past the Soča, which has countless pools and bathing opportunities in summer, directly back to the starting point.

The tour is also suitable in the summer months, as the uphill is completely in the shade. High temperatures are only to be expected on the south side. In the middle section of the trail at an altitude of just under 950 meters above sea level is the Hum starting point, which can be reached relatively easily on foot and offers a good view down towards Kobarid.

Only two or three sections are S4; the rest are easier—S2 to S3. The lower 500 meters of descent is a bumpy ride over a carpet of rocks—unfortunately, this part isn't really scenic.
