Monte Lema

Monte Lema

Monte Lema is almost lost in the shadows of Monte Tamaro and Monte Bar among the mountain bike highlights in Ticino. Yet there are no less attractive single trails hidden here.

Description

The Italian side of Monte Lema is the attractive side for mountain bikers - the trails here are smoother and the descents lead all the way down to Lake Maggiore. That's why this tour to Monte Lema starts in Luino. From the town center, climb up on small roads via Poppino and Dumenza to Due Cossani. After the village, a small road branches off to the right, leading up to Pradècolo in many bends. Now the route turns into a gravel road and later into a singletrail, and at the very end the bike has to be pushed up to the summit of Monte Lema. But it's worth it for the panorama alone. The view extends over the Lugano region and Malcantone as far as Monte Rosa on the other side. The summit is the starting point of the long singletrail descent. This leads over the southern ridge to the Passo di Monte Faëta, where you branch off to the right and follow a gently sloping singletrail. A little later, the first-class descent through the Valle Cortesel branches off to the left. You later pass Dumenza and reach the national border, but remain on Italian soil. In a mix of trails and gravel roads, you roll down to Creva, a suburb of Luino.

The trail from Passo di Monte Faëta and then through Valle Cortesel would be a highlight, but would definitely need some maintenance. There are no trees, but lots of small trees, stones and foliage. It is extremely rough to ride. We had to dismount again and again. Astano-Sessa would probably be the better option at the moment.

Tip. Descent via Astano and Sessa from there back to Dumenza. Between Astano and Sessa, a really beautiful, challenging rock garden.

Where exactly, do you have GPX data or something?
How would you recommend the tour overall, e.g. in comparison to Monte Tamaro?

I rode the trail today and absolutely did not enjoy it. The trail from Alpe Fontana is in very poor condition, overgrown, lots of undergrowth and fallen trees, sometimes you can't see the trail at all

Beautiful and not very difficult tour. However, we took the cable car up Monte Lema, which made it a bit easier ;-)
