Monte Bar - San Lucio | Ride MTB

Monte Bar - San Lucio

The Monte Bar tour is one of Ticino's famous mountain bike classics. It circles the wide valley basin of Lugano, and the super-long single trail to San Lucio is famous throughout Switzerland.

Description

The tour starts at Lugano train station, from where you ride along the road towards Tesserete. After the hospital, turn left towards Savosa and Porza. Continue riding in the direction of Comano until you reach the signposted mountain bike route (Route 66). Follow this route northwards, but then continue straight on at the outdoor pool to Tesserete, from where you ride along a small road to Bidogno. This is where the asphalt ascent to the Capanna Monte Bar begins. Here you are back on the signposted mountain bike route, which you now follow to San Lucio. The extremely long single trail is undoubtedly one of the most attractive mountain bike routes in Ticino. After San Lucio, a singletrail follows southwards over the ridge to the Botta di San Bernardo and on past the Cima alla Pianca to the (catered) Capanna Pairolo. This is followed by the long descent to Lugano. You start off on a technical singletrail to Sonvico and then hurtle along the asphalt road to Stampa. The route rides along the Cassarate stream directly into the city center of Lugano.

I know the tour the other way around, and the other one is much better. You ride endlessly up to Cap Monte Bar with hundreds of bikers. Afterwards, I traverse everything that is normally really tough until I reach the church of San Lucio. From then on I didn't know any more. There's more uphill and then it's constantly up and down. 7min really cool trail and then only road everything down. I've never ridden so far uphill for so little beautiful downhill 🙈. But it was a great fitness workout and the weather was perfect! Enduro bike can stay here. Good tour for someone with little skills but a lot of fitness.

The track does not match the map and description... Please correct.

Hello everyone
Good tour to train seat leather and calves! Pleasant ascent to Capanna Monte Bar, a stop at the cool hut is recommended! Really strong trail to San Lucio with a gigantic panorama, exhausting but really beautiful! Unfortunately, what comes next is almost a mockery... 700 m are destroyed on a concrete alpine road - no idea if there is an alternative! If anyone knows of one, please let us know.

I recommend this tour from Piandanazzo...back to Tesserete. Enduro bike is an advantage.

A really nice tour! I split it into two days. On the first day, I still had time to try out the nice trail from Piandanazzo down to Bidogno and enjoy the sunset from the summit of Monte Bar before dinner at the beautifully situated hut. On the second day, instead of following the track directly to Lugano, I climbed up to the Monte Bre Route via Route 66, against the actual direction of travel. You have to push from time to time, but once you reach Route 356, it's pure enjoyment all the way to Monte Bre. There is also a magnificent view over Lugano and the lake. At the end, the long, scenic descent down the serpentine road to Lugano awaits.

The first section of the GPX to Tesserete is rubbish. This GPX just follows the fire roads through the forest when there are super flowy trails which crisscross the forest.
Also the later sections of the GPX miss out on lots of great singletrail. We eventually ignored the GPX and it's love of fireroads and founds endless single trails to the end of the ride. Having got my rant out of the way, This is a great ride. Lunch in the SAC hut is a real bonus after a long climb. The route requires a very high level of fitness and riding to enjoy it as it is technical all the way and if you get tired then it would be a real slog. Top 10 rides..?? maybe just about....
Also, this is the best direction to ride the loop in.
