Sighignola

Sighignola

Sighignola is one of the panoramic hotspots in Ticino and is easily accessible by road. A jagged singletrail descent also rides from the summit high above Lake Lugano down to the lake.

Description

The ascent to Monte Sighignola begins on the country road that rides up to the village of Arogno and then continues through a gorge to the Italian village of Lanzo d'Intelvi. The route continues unabated on asphalt to the summit of Monte Sighignola, from where there is a sensational view of the entire Sopra Ceneri. This route is one of the classic road bike routes in Ticino and is also very popular with motorized excursionists.

The descent starts right at the summit and the single trail initially rides quite harmlessly through the steep terrain. At a junction, you stay to the right; from here, the trail becomes very technical to unrideable in places. However, these sections are rather short, and in between, you cycle through the terrain on an S3 path. This section offers plenty for lovers of tricky trails. You reach the village of Arogno again, which you had already passed on the ascent.

Then there are a few more meters of altitude to overcome before the descent to Bissone. This is much smoother and more agile than the challenging upper part of the trail. The trail rides directly to Bissone, where you can finish the tour with a refreshing swim in Lake Lugano.

Anyone expecting a trail miracle here is likely to be disappointed.... The view at the summit is magnificent, the ascent is easy if you ride the post bus to Arogno.
The upper part of the trail has quite nice, technical sections. But some parts are not rideable. No feasible line and, above all, no room to fall. The lower part is dredged flat - just highway.
Not worth it apart from the great view.

In the lower part from Arogno, the trail has apparently been turned into a highway, according to the local.
We took the trail over the ridge to Maroggia. In the lower part, the trail is still quite wild and not well maintained.

The situation has changed in the upper part. The litter has been cleared away. The wood is still lying in the lower part. You have to fight your way through...

From Arogno you could alternatively ride over the ridge down to Maroggia, where there are no trees. The trail is nice to ride. However, the path that branches off to the right at about 400 meters above sea level over to Bissone is not recommended.

Wanted to ride this tour on 17.07.24 with pleasure. Unfortunately, because of some fallen trees and loose rocks, the upper part was never really fun. If this trail had been maintained, I would certainly have had a lot of fun.
There are so many trees in the way on the lower trail after the counter-climb that you can't get through them. Impossible without a chainsaw. Unfortunately, this was not marked anywhere.
