Valle di Muggio

Valle di Muggio

The Valle di Muggio is a wonderfully forgotten side valley near Chiasso. The tour circles the valley and impresses with the many rifugios along the route and the famous descent from Monte Bisbino.

Description

From Chiasso, you initially roll through the valley floor and then climb up into the Valle di Muggio via Morbio. This is where the idyllic part begins, rolling along the little road far into the forgotten world of this southern mountain valley. A little after the village of Muggio, keep right, climb up to the Alpe della Bolla and then roll down into the Val Callaccia, a side valley of the Valle di Muggio on the Italian side. The next ascent awaits, which rides to the ridge between Sasso Gordona and Monte di Binate and is the starting point of the long traverse to Monte Bisbino. On this section you pass three rifugios - the ideal opportunity for a lunch break. Finally, there is another short climb up to Monte Bisbino before the legendary descent on the Swiss side along the national border back into Mendrisiotto.

Everything is great except for the descent at the end. The lower half of the descent to Chiasso is no longer really rideable.

We rode the tour from Chiasso on Aug 23, 2022. Only the Rifugio Murelli was open. The tour is very beautiful but unfortunately from Mte Bispino in the upper part the trail is sometimes very heavily washed out (S3) then the descent to Chiasso slipped in many places, the wooden steps are often missing and covered by leaves, no grip (S3/S4).
Overall, however, a great experience,
