Monte San Giorgio | Ride MTB

Monte San Giorgio

Monte San Giorgio towers between Lake Lugano and Mendrisiotto and is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It can also be tackled by mountain bike by climbing up from the south side and riding downhill on single trails through the steep eastern flank.

Description

From Mendrisio, you can either take the small roads or car-free forest lanes to Meride. The crisp section of the ascent begins at the church of San Silvestro. From here, a steep and rough alpine road rides up to Cassina and past Forello to the summit of Monte San Giorgio. From the summit there is a wonderful view of the Lugano region and the Mendrisiotto. Now it's time for the descent, which first leads over the ridge and then turns left down the steep eastern slope of Monte San Giorgio. The descent is difficult and should only be attempted by experienced mountain bikers. You pass Alp Albio and continue downhill through the steep forest. The descent ends right at the edge of the village of Riva San Vitale. The tour now rides along the road towards Mendrisio for a while, then later along the Laveggio stream and the Morea stream to the village center of Mendrisio.

The description of the tour omits some important details. The ascent from Meride is steep and bumpy. We couldn't ride a lot of it (no eBike) and mainly bumped. On the descent, there are many stairs with large steps that cannot be avoided. The path is not well maintained, the ground is loose with large boulders (from flooding?). Here, too, we had to push and carry a lot. Slippery with bike shoes. The view really is magnificent and at the end of the day it was still a lot of fun.

I rode the tour on 17.9.21. Very steep ascent. Challenging with E-MTB, but easily doable. The way back via the east side is very difficult to ride. Parts of the path were probably washed away. Lots of pushing sections.

Did the tour from Meride today 30.6.21. So the ascent could not be ridden by us (without e-bike). We pushed the bikes up to the summit for about 1 hour. From there, however, we took the path on the ridge, which is very smooth until shortly before Meride. The last section to Capolago is then more challenging in terms of terrain, as there are a few steps in the steep terrain. However, most of it is rideable. If we had an e-bike, it would have been a great tour.

Current gpx trail closed, but very nice alternative found, very flowy along the ridge. Then a technically challenging trail down to Riva. Can be found on Trailforks.

Wonderful half-day tour. Technicians get their money's worth.
At Pkt. 700 hm, be sure to follow the official hiking trail and not turn left downhill (as per the GPX track). The path is no longer maintained and hardly passable.

The climb from Meride is really tough. But it could be quite fun with an e-bike. The descent is blocked and very steep. A great challenge for good riders. At 740m you really have to turn right, even if it doesn't look like it. At the fork at 700m we turned right, contrary to the GPS track. The path is apparently no longer maintained and is not marked.
We enjoyed the tour.

Fortunately, I rode the tour on an e-bike. The ascent is technical with the e-bike, but it's really fun! I had to push/carry in two short places, but I couldn't find the right line! Without motor support, the whole uphill is guaranteed to be really tough and normally trained bikers will probably have to push more often!
The view at the top is great!
The descent is also very technical and probably a challenge even for experienced enduro riders

Great panoramic tour - long and steep ascent that only very strong riders can conquer in the saddle!
