Monte Bar Tour (Gegenuhrzeigersinn)
Description
Mountain bike tours on the Monte Bar usually start in Tesserete. If you arrive by train and set off from Lugano, you will reach Tesserete via the single trails in the San Bernardo forest. This is where the ascent begins on the little-used road through the Val Colla. A little below Bogno, keep right and climb up to Certara. The route now turns into a gravel road, which is quite steep in places and leads to San Lucio. At this small group of houses with the famous chapel, the most important part of the ascent has been mastered. Now follows the fantastic singletrack trail along the height in the direction of Capanna Monte Bar. A little before the hut, in Piandanazzo, turn left onto the flowing descent. You reach a gravel road, follow it and finally climb a few meters on the asphalt road up to Motto della Croce. From the vantage point with the large cross, you have a first-class view over the Lugano region. A singletrail now leads to Davrosio, where you turn sharp left and take the trail via Sore and Carnago back to Tesserete.

The "fantastic singletrail along the height in the direction of Capanna Monte Bar" has unfortunately been completely "renovated" over a length of 8km. The road to hell is paved with good intentions! All tech features have been removed. The features such as the small drops, stream crossings, rocks, etc. have been completely milled flat and have become a gravel path. The fantastic single trail has become an eBike superhighway. Just a shame.
Is there a strong lobby of (e)bikers for whom the trail, which has existed for decades, was too technical? Who wanted something like this? Who financed it? And how will it continue?
At the Capanna Tamaro, the landlords have told us that they unfortunately have to give up after 29 years. There is a huge renovation project on the Tamaro. New lift, new path. I don't have a good feeling about it. Will the Tamaro have a new concept after the Monte Bar? What exactly is happening in Ticino? Does anyone know anything? Ticino has been MTB-friendly for some time now, but have they got it wrong?
My friend has been riding the tour for years as he lives in the region, and also several times a week.
He has experienced the various conversions over the years and what he always liked was the challenge of mastering the technical passages.
Unfortunately, we don't have the answers to Alexander's questions, but that answers itself...
We agree that the trails need maintenance, especially after storms in Ticino, but this flat milling is almost criminal.
We'll be surprised with the Tamaro, but hopefully not too much.

I rode the tour today. Best conditions and super nice, long descent at the end. Gladly again!
A brilliant season opener, which I rode today on 25.3.23 on my e-bike. There was a bit of rain last night, which is why the streams made for an artistic design on the bike and clothes :-) Otherwise everything was dry.
San Lucia super rideable thanks to new concrete slabs.
Great picnic spots at Piandanazzo, Grasso and Motto della Croce.
Various water fountains along the way, you can easily travel with a small bidon.
Tip: after Precamorina (south of Oggio) there are numerous free parking facilities along the road. To reach them again, it is best to ride a few meters up to Roveredo at the barrier above "Or Mártro" and turn right at the first possible road (dead end). Then go straight on between the rustico of A Mièra and follow the trail to Oggio.
I rode the tour on Saturday 4.3.2023. Simply wonderful. The ascent to San Lucio is newly made in the upper part with concrete tracks. It is pleasant to ride but already quite steep.
The high trail and the descents are first class - still a bit muddy in the upper part due to the recently melted snow.
All in all, simply a brilliant spring tour. I can only recommend it.
A beautiful, relaxing fall tour. The colors of the forests are indescribable in November, pure Indian summer - and you can enjoy this to the full on the first section. However, this section consists mainly of hard work (at least for organic bikers like me), there is hardly any riding fun.
From Motta della Croce onwards, the trail becomes a little more challenging and the riding becomes more enjoyable.
All in all, certainly a worthwhile tour. However, it is also very strenuous. If you ride the whole route under your own steam, the evening is certainly over...
I rode the tour today on the EMTB. Absolutely brilliant. The uphill sections on the trail to San Lucio are really fun with the EMTB. Uphill flow, so to speak :-D
The last approach is a little more technical on some rough, loose stones, but everything is doable. Then a nice trail through the forest. According to my sat nav, it was just over 1500m. So an absolute recommendation from me for this tour.
I rode the tour last year on 04.06.2021. One of the best tours that has everything to offer.
1st ascent from Tesserete to Rifugio San Lucio is a bit long and always has steep ramps.
2nd high trail from San Lucio to Rifugio Piandanazzo takes a lot of effort (constant ups and downs),
but always has beautiful trail sections. Always accompanied by a great panorama.
3. the 1st trail from Piandanazzo to the road at approx. 1300m is really fun. The trail itself is quite flowy and
you can let it run properly.
4th First follows a counter-climb to the Motto della Croce. Here you have a wonderful view of Lake Lugano. The trail is a little more technical and rocky than the 1st trail, but also a pure pleasure to ride. The trail then spits you out again directly in Tesserete.
A great tour with lots of highlights, a super high-altitude trail and fun, crisp descents. The only downer is the refreshment stop on the Passo San Lucio. I stopped at the first restaurant at the bottom and will certainly not do it again. My apricot tart was of sub-standard quality and the coffee was the worst I've had in almost 50 years.
I don't know what the upper restaurant is like but maybe someone will make an entry about it.
After I was already very disappointed with the San Lucia restaurant last year, it was even worse this year. The hope that the landlord had changed was unfortunately not fulfilled. Some of the coffee and food was inedible and expensive and the "boss" was extremely unfriendly. I will avoid this restaurant in future and cater for myself.
Otherwise, this Harte Tour is one of the best in Ticino, simply superb.
Is snow-free and easy to ride! The tour is as described but has 1800m.
Great tour. Can only confirm the comments below - especially the three-part route described by Borntrail on 2.11.20.
(1) If you don't fancy the asphalt ascent, you can also take the post bus to Certara. It rides every 2 hours, approx. 8:30, 10:30 from Tesserete (of course we caught the gap in between :-).
(2) The ups and downs between the San Lucio-Piandanazzo crossing, some of them with poisonous stretches, also cost us quite a bit of energy, but this was compensated by the sensational panorama. That's why we needed a lunch break at the brilliant Capanna Monte Bar and missed the single trails from Piandanazzo. The path from Piandanazzo to the hut and on to Motta della Croce is a boring road, even paved from a little below the hut.
(3) This makes the descent via Davrosio all the more pleasantly surprising. Initially a little (unproblematic) technical, it becomes increasingly flowy and fun through chestnut forests and clearings - first-class riding!
Update: The route south out of Certara is currently (23.10.21) really impassable due to canal work. However, since the canals are already in the ditch, this could be history again in the next 2 weeks. Take the bypass route north out and then up the north-eastern side of the ridge, don't be impressed by the pack of no-driving signs ("Via chiusa") including the threat of a 100 CHF fine. The "chiusa" refers to two easily passable granite blocks on the road shortly before you return to the original route.
Top tour with a great panorama and lots of trail fun.
Did the tour on 19.5. As already described, a sensational panorama. The section from San Lucio with the many small climbs is extremely strenuous. Snowfields are only small and not a problem. The two longer downhill sections are top class!
it's a really great tour. only at the moment there are still a lot of snowy sections that take a lot of energy! (as a woman, my husband says ;) and with an e-bike) the descent is all the more worth it! really cool!
We rode the tour today. There is always snow in between and you have to walk a lot. Some passages are even dangerous as there is a risk of falling. Nevertheless, it was a lot of fun and put a smile on my face. We had about 5.5 hours with eMTB...
Very cool tour with flowing descents and great views.
@Borntrail: easy with 3x pushing on the traverse and I'm not MacAskill. The traverse is quite flowy in between.
Overall at most a 2-square tour with the riding technique
Checked 2020
Super tour! There's not really much to say and certainly nothing to complain about, but here are a few thoughts and tips from our experience yesterday.
The tour can be divided into three parts:
1. ascent Tesserete-San Lucio: Not to be underestimated, has several quite steep ramps to conquer. Thighs are in for a treat.
2nd crossing San Lucio-Piandanazzo: Unfortunately not too flowy, lots of ups and downs, even technically experienced riders are sure to descend 10 times here. But the panorama makes up for it.
3rd Piandanazzo-Tesserete: Two sensational descents with a counter ascent in between. These and the magnificent panorama throughout the tour make you forget all your efforts.
Conclusion: More than worth it. We can only recommend the tour.
Quite perfectly summarized. However, we didn't really enjoy the crossing that much. It's certainly much cooler to ride with an e-bike than without a motor, where it's an endlessly long (arduous) feat of strength - especially when there are also lots of hikers on the way. Then you really stop a lot, as the trail is quite narrow.

A great tour that is also easy to do by public transport. The last part from Davrosio should not be underestimated in terms of technique and time. We had to switch to asphalt at the end because it was getting dark...
We rode the tour today and are still "flashed" (in the evening). Trails without end, simply a dream!!! The person who recorded this tour should have a special place in "biker heaven".
The first few kilometers are all road, then the route rides onto a gravel road in the forest which is quite steep in places. (Road works are currently taking place there). But then you are rewarded with super trails without end. Really top class.... Alex & Thomas
tomorrow
I rode the tour on 25.6.19.
One of the most beautiful tours I've ridden so far.
It was just great fun, I can only recommend it.
