Baisse du Pape

Col du Pape (Sospel)

From Sospel, there is a twelve-kilometre ascent to the Baisse du Pape, where the trail starts down to Saint Jean. After a short ascent, the trail becomes very technical over scree and large rock steps to Fort Saint Roch. At the end, a steep trail with grippy forest floor awaits, leading you back to Sospel. A sporty tour that requires some riding skills.

Description

Start from the town square in Sospel and ride along the SS D2566 towards Moulinet. At a fork in the road, turn left towards the Mas fleuri campsite and continue up past it on the left. The road changes to gravel and now climbs steadily for about six kilometers until you turn right onto the SS D2204 just before the Col de Braus. Alternatively, you can drive straight up the SS D2204 from Sospel. Once you reach the Col de Braus, take a wide gravel road on the right up to the Baisse du Pape. At the Baisse du Pape, the trail to St. Jean follows on the left. This is very stony, but easy to ride as it is not so steep, at least at the beginning. It becomes more technical in the lower section. Cross the D2204 and enter the village of Saint Jean and ride up the hill on the right towards the fortress, which you have already seen from the opposite side. A trail starts at the third hairpin bend. It is a narrow path that runs along the side of the mountain. You shouldn't make any mistakes here, because it goes down quite a long way. After the crossing, the trail drops steeply. Rocks with loose scree demand increased attention. Due to the storms at the end of 2020, you ride on the large, washed-out stones. You have to keep some momentum to roll over the stones. At the end, a forest with soft forest floor awaits, you surf very steeply down to Fort Saint Roch and rejoin the D2204. At the cemetery, turn right along a dirt track back to the old town of Sospel. The average level of difficulty is S3, but there are a few S4 sections. Important: not recommended in the rain.

Because the ascent over the Col de Braus is rather bumpy, we decided to take the tarred road first to the Col St Jean and then branch off towards the Col de Braus. Wonderful view from the Baisse du Pape.
The first part was extremely fun, alternating between flowy and slightly technical passages.
Second part as described by Monika: streambed-like, narrow, overgrown with thorns in places. Rideable but moderately fun. Fun again just before Fort Saint Roch. You just have to be careful there because there are also motorcyclists on the trails^^

Rode the tour today. The ascent is cool. Mostly shady, pleasant gradient, a bit gravelly in places, but very easy to ride.
The 1st trail corresponded to the description and was good.
I would definitely not recommend the 2nd trail, which starts in the third bend from the ascent to the fortress to Saint Jean. Ok, if you like shredding down a 20cm wide, heavily overgrown "creek bed" and putting a strain on both yourself and, above all, your equipment, you can do it. We definitely didn't enjoy it!
The 3rd and final trail was very cool and fun again. There, however, we followed the busy trail and ended up at Fort Saint Roch.
