Feldernjöchl

Feldernjöchl

The circular tour from Ehrwald via the Feldernjöchl and the technical trail over the Steinerne Hüttl is one of the highlights of the Zugspitz Arena and offers an exceptional enduro tour outside the main hiking season.

Description

The tour starts just outside Ehrwald at the Ehrwalder Almbahn valley station parking lot. From here, the route rides steadily uphill along an asphalt road with moderate gradients to the Ehrwalder Alm. This tourist region is known for its numerous lifts and refreshment stops, making it an attractive place to take a break.

From the Ehrwalder Alm, the route continues on gravel roads above the vegetation line towards Issentalkopf. Shortly before Issentalkopf, the trail branches off to the right onto a hiking trail to Feldernjöchl. With its alpine characteristics, this section is very reminiscent of the Dolomites. Some passages are easy to ride, but the bike is often pushed. Once you reach the Feldernjöchl, you have the so-called Gatterl, the crossing from Austria to Germany towards the Zugspitze, in view. Here, however, you take the turn-off to the right, which leads to the descent towards Steinernes Hüttl.

The descent begins with a trail that ranges in difficulty from S2 to S3. The conditions can change considerably due to erosion damage and weather conditions. Once you reach the Steinernen Hüttl, the descent remains challenging. The upper sections with hairpin bends require good technique, as the bends are tight, flat and sometimes blocked. As the trail progresses, it gradually becomes smoother and easier to ride. Particularly in the lower section, where windthrows have cleared the forest, the route offers a pleasant ride through larch and spruce forests. Here, however, you should watch out for traces of forest vehicles and sudden transitions.

Above the Tillfussalm, you will come across the official cycle route, which rides back to the Ehrwalder Alm. After a short panoramic crossing, the last trail section follows, which runs through spruce forests over forest and root passages (difficulty S2) before you finally arrive back at the starting point of the tour.

Tips:

  • This tour should preferably be undertaken outside of the vacation season and on weekdays, as the number of hikers is particularly high at weekends and on public holidays.
  • The tour is easily doable with a light e-bike, as the uphill to Feldernjöchl is partly rideable.

Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.

Very beautiful and rewarding tour. Unfortunately, the landlord of the Steinernen Hüttl doesn't like bikers at all. He even "supervised" from the hut that I was pushing well. However, as this is quite a tricky and steep section anyway, I recommend pushing from just before the hut to the river crossing below to avoid conflict. In terms of trail fun, you won't miss much on this passage anyway.
