Höllkopf

Höllkopf

The Höllkopf with its magnificent location in the Mieminger Kette offers an absolute MTB treat in terms of trails and panoramic views.

Description

The tour starts in Nassereith. From here it is a relaxed ride on asphalt along the old main road, which has been converted into a cycle path, to Holzleiten and then on gravel along the official cycle route towards Lehnberghaus. Past the Lehnberghaus, the path becomes steeper and steeper before you finally take the path towards the Grünsteinscharte and, at an altitude of around 1750 meters above sea level, push or carry your bike up through the so-called hell to the Höllkopf. At the Höllkopf you are at almost 2200 meters above sea level and enjoy a magnificent mountain panorama. The Dolomites flair comes alive here.

The trail descent is just as magnificent. The route to the Marienbergjoch is very varied between S1 and S3. Here you come to the next trail cut-off. The difficulty here is similar to the previous one, before you reach the official Barbarasteig trail at the Sunnalm. This varies just as much and is on S1 to S2, with S3 passages in places, and rides in this style down to the Marienbergbahn valley station. The route then continues along the Via Claudia cycle path past Lake Weissensee, Lake Blindsee and on towards the Nassereither Alm. Far away from the stress that prevails on the Fernpass most of the time, the route passes through forests before reaching the so-called Kaswasserweg trail, which you take on difficulty levels S1 and S2 towards Nassereith, thus completing the loop.

Note: The route is located on Austrian territory and leads over routes that are not approved for mountain bikers. Riding this route on a mountain bike is the responsibility of each individual, in full awareness of the legal situation.

I've always wanted to cycle up the Höllkopf. Unfortunately, I found the trail quite disappointing. Lots of gravel at the top, the sections are more upper S3 and also exposed. Even worse is the aforementioned trail cutter - a very narrow path with very tight hairpin bends. This is also almost impossible to ride, with repeated counter-climbs on the traverse. From the Barbarasteig it's fun, but I don't have to do the tour for that. It's a shame really, as the scenery is very beautiful.
