A great ride with stunning scenery and plenty of trail sections—both uphill, flat, and downhill (there’s “only” 500 meters of elevation gain in total, but you know that going in). The transfer section back to the starting point after the last trail runs along a bike path. All in all, definitely worth doing.
With the water level high, access to the passage with the waterfalls was impossible for us at km 12.7. Instead of retreating completely, we balanced the bike under our arms over the "dam wall" to the other side of the stream. Above the "Gour de la Sompe" you come back to the original track. We rode the loop in the drizzle. Up to Lagorce everything was in the green zone, the uphill with good grip was technically demanding, the downhill pretty. Crossing the ridge from Fontaine du Cade is easy in terms of the ascent, but we pushed for the last 50 meters. Unfortunately, on this spring day, the singletrail downhill had mutated into a small stream and the very sticky consistency of the earthy ground in wet conditions made the downhill a slippery ride. Moderately steep, but still doable in these conditions. Once at the bottom, the official main stream offers itself as a free car wash. The excellent kebab in Roums immediately softens the blow of such formative highlights of the day. The tour definitely has two rewarding descents. To categorize it as cross-country seems a bit daring to me and could even offend Sina, Nino, Jolanda and the like. I support the tour author's rating: overall impression 4 out of 6.
There's not really much to see of trails on this tour, the scenery is certainly great, but if you're expecting trails here you're in the wrong place, it's more of a cross-country tour with 1-2 descents, the one at the end is the best, the detour over the waterfall can be safely omitted if there's no water flowing, the path to the waterfall in Les SIlholes is rather difficult to ride but beautiful. If you want a cross-country tour, S1 (max S2) over hill and dale above the Ardeche, with little trail and fireworks but with sweat and dirt, this is the right place for you.
Overall impression rather 2 out of 5.
