Grosschlierental

The Grossschlieren Valley is a deserted area near Sarnen and forms the basis for a wonderful mountain bike route.

Description

The initial ascent rides from Sarnen along the pass road towards the Glaubenberg Pass. Immediately before the pass summit, turn right at the Langis inn and follow the forest road and a singletrail section through the Grossschlieren valley down to Alp Horweli. Now it's time for the second ascent, 220 meters up to Schrotenegg. This is followed by a rapid descent via Chrüzliegg to Rischigenmatt, then on single trails and a few short sections on mountain roads down to the main road a little south of Alpnach. This road forms the final section of the tour back to Sarnen.

Beautiful tour. We followed as per the recommendation of Andreas W the Veloroute 291 for the biggest part of the tour, until the trails started. The first 20km is mainly on asphalt. It is a very quite road with hardly any cars and goes through the forest/wetlands. At about 15km we took a fun little detour- turned right and took the trail next to the river. We could not find the trail entry at 23.5km, so instead took the next one right (appr. 1km further). From then onwards the fun started! Very nice trails whith changing scenery/conditions. Partly through the wetlands and forest. I would grade it as S1-S2 without many exposed parts.

Beautiful scenery, but very little singletrail. As an enduro rider(!), I would no longer ride it. More for the advanced gravel rider. At the beginning of April there were still a lot of snow fields and a lot of match. But that's my own fault :-)

Instead of taking the pass road towards Glaubenberg, it is smarter to follow cycle route 291, which is described at the following link. https://schweizmobil.ch/de/mountainbikeland/route-291
This leads along side roads and forest roads with virtually no traffic as far as Langis and is pleasant to ride. From Chrüzliegg, you can follow the route described here again or continue on 291. 291 goes a bit on asphalt and then on the Franzosenweg, which is also very fun.
@Ride - change the ascent to Langis to the 291, then the whole tour is fun.

I rode the tour on Saturday, June 3, 2023. A necessary evil at the beginning of the tour is the ascent on the road up to the Glaubenberg. From then on, the tour starts to be fun. The trails through the moor should not be underestimated, as they also require a few "grains". Very scenic to ride.

We rode the tour on Sunday, November 8, 2020. You can save yourself the start and take the bus up to Gasthaus Langis, provided you get a lift. We deliberately decided against it and drove up for an hour and a half, being overtaken by car-posers in their lowered and pimped-up machines at minimum distance and at overdriven speed.

From the inn onwards, however, the tour gets really good. The longer you ride, the fewer hikers there are. We hardly saw anyone for the last hour. It takes more than 2 hours to ride to the highest point, which requires some fitness. Contrary to the report, the route is technically demanding and challenging and offers everything a biker's heart desires. The paths are sometimes bumpy, bumpy and sometimes very muddy. But the scenery is great.

The Grossschlieren valley is very romantic for me to ride, there is a small stream along which I followed a hiking trail and it felt like I was somewhere in Canada or Alaska. From Schrotenegg, instead of riding down to Rischigenmatt, I rode further up past the Älggäu Alp and further up to Rickmettlen and then down the interesting stone path to Alp Wängen. The stone path looks like an old Roman road to me. Next Sunday's O-Tour rides along this path in the opposite direction to Horweli and Langis. My tour in this area led from Wängen Alp down to Lütholdsmatt and then back up towards Pilatus Matthorn. I started the tour from Alpnach See up to Lopper and back down to the valley floor and in Sarnen on the O-Tour route to Langis. I recorded the tour on video for indoor cycling and made it available on YouTube. The video is also good for planning tours in this area, you can see a lot of what the terrain looks like.
