Obwaldner Frühlingstour

Arvigrat Abfahrt Ächerlipass Obwalden

The route of the Obwalden Spring Tour consists of the lower part of the descent of the Arvigrat Tour and a loop over the Mueterschwandenberg. A rewarding route with a high proportion of singletrack on the descent, which can often be ridden almost all year round.

Description

Leaving the center of Sarnen, the capital of Obwalden, you head south and follow the Melchaa stream for a short distance. You reach the village of Kerns on a slight ascent via field paths, from where you quickly gain altitude following the Ächerlistrasse. At a forest hut with a fountain, keep right and climb another three hundred meters. In the generously developed Sädelrank right-hand bend, ride straight ahead and after a few meters turn left onto the singletrail. Slightly downhill, then maintaining the height and leading uphill over roots, you reach a gravel pit via the first part of the super descent. You then choose several trail sections, which are interrupted by short traverses on forest roads. The ground alternates between rooty, stony and, when wet, slippery forest floor. After around three hundred Elevation loss, you reach an asphalt road, follow it to the forest hut known from the ascent and then enter the second part of the descent a few meters further up.

Over fun and well-maintained trails, you reach a residential area, ride up to a chapel and soon afterwards onto the next trail. Cross through the core forest to the road to the Mueterschwandenberg with the Drachenflue as the highest point. A not too steep yet challenging singletrail leads over the ridge towards Alpnach airfield. The second part of this descent is a little steeper and represents the final firework of the tour in terms of trails. You reach the starting point along the Wichelsee and Sarneraa lakes.

Rode the trail on March 7, 2026. There’s currently logging work going on at the top, so that section of the trail isn’t rideable. The lower section is no problem. The trail from Drachenflue is rideable and fun.

Great tour for spring!
We usually do the Xxl version in summer.

Hello Richard
Cool video, it gives a great impression of the trail.
I'm planning the tour for May 1st with a few colleagues.
Could you send me the track of the XXL tour (markus@haveaniceday.ch), then I might be able to use it as an alternative trail.
Thanks and regards Markus

A very cool tour that surprised us positively throughout.
A tough first ascent, but easy to ride. The descent - wow! Probably more like a 4 out of 6, demanding, challenging but also fun - simply great!
The second ascent is then more relaxed and shorter than the first and still in beautiful surroundings.
Followed by a flowing descent with a few counter-climbs through a very beautiful forest.
We'd love to do it again, a great tour in central Switzerland, thanks to the Ride Team! ♡
We recommend the pizzeria right at Sarnen station at the end of the tour!

Great tour.
The ascent is well worth it and with company to chat with, the 700 m to the Sädelrank go by themselves.
The descent was a bit damp, so some sections were quite slippery, but the fun factor was definitely high.
Ascent to the MSB also pedaled up comfortably. Fortunately with a little wind, in summer probably a bit hot, with the midday sun burning. A refreshment stop is possible from spring about 500m before the highest point:

The descent from the MSB to Alpnach is aptly described as "not too steep yet challenging singletrail".

if that's a 3 i wonder what a 5 is. as a beginner i learned a lot.

by the way, i met some locals who told me that the trail has eroded a lot in the meantime. maybe that's the reason why it needs an update in terms of technology.

Very cool tour, very slippery in the wet because it's almost all downhill in the forest. When it's dry, it's certainly brutally cool 😎

Did the tour today in great weather and dry ground - top!!!
Challenging trails, but was able to ride everything except for 1..2 places. Riding technique was a good '3'.
Although it was a public holiday I only met a few hikers, I had a lot of fun :-)
