Kronberg

The technically very demanding tour up the Kronberg impresses with the panorama on the famous panoramic mountain and the crisp singletrail descent to Urnäsch.

Description

From the village of Urnäsch, you start the tour by riding along the road to Appenzell as far as the village of Gonten. Turn right here and take the asphalt mountain road to the Chlepfhütte and finally the Scheidegg on the ridge. From here, continue westwards on a largely rideable singletrail along the ridge to the Kronberg summit, 800 meters above the starting point. Now follows a technically very demanding descent on the ridge southwards with a counter-climb to Petersalp. Here you keep northwards on the ridge and finally reach the hamlet of Herrendürren and Zimmermanns-Lauftegg via a gravel path. The route now takes you directly back to Urnäsch, alternating between a steep alpine road and a technically challenging singletrail and ending just before the village on a paved access road.

Note: Bike bans are frequently encountered on this route in Appenzellerland. The authorities explicitly do not want mountain bikers on this route. Dealing with this circumstance is up to each individual and is a matter of their own discretion.

It's not really a cool tour when you keep getting barked at that it's forbidden to drive here. Maybe it wasn't really the right time of year. Don't ride this tour when the alpine farmers are up there and not on a weekend!
