Weissbachschlucht
Description
From Herisau, ride a few meters along the Glatt towards Schwellbrunn, but then keep left and head up to Nieschberg. On gravel paths, you reach the Säntisblick (road to Schwellbrunn) via Wolfhofstatt and Horschwendi. Follow the singletrail on the hilltop to Risi, where you follow the road to Dicken. Before the hamlet of Moosegg, turn right onto a forest path and follow it up to Fuchsacker high above Degersheim. Follow the path northwards for a few more meters until it turns into a flowing singletrail and leads to the Degersheim-Schwellbrunn road. Stay on the hilltop and ride down to the Talmühle mill and continue northwards on the road for a few meters. Then a singletrail branches off to the right into the beautiful Wissbachtobel. From the small lake, a steep gravel path leads up to Schwänberg and you reach the village of Herisau via Ramsen on the asphalt road.

I rode the route a second time after 3.5 years. It was great again and now at the beginning of November a beautiful tour mostly above the fog. Good variety between trails, roads and wide paths. I particularly enjoyed a coffee with Schlorzifladen in the Fuchsacker restaurant (https://fuchsacker.ch/) high above Degersheim. When it's not busy, you can help yourself here and pay by cash or Twint. The driving ban I mentioned in 2021 still exists and in fact there is also an absolute ban without exception for bicycles before the path into the gorge. However, this only applies to the 200 meters to the farm (whose owner is also not allowed to ride, as no exception is signaled for residents). I'll try to contact the municipality for the first ban. Maybe something can be done.
Pleasant, varied tour. I would love to ride it again. Here are a few more comments:
-The section in the first part from Vollhofstatt to Säntisblick is actually off-limits (even for bikes).
-The access road to the gorge is incorrectly marked on the map. At the Talmühle, do not turn right up the cantonal road, where there is no path leading down later, but continue straight on until you reach the official hiking trail on the right.
-A detour is currently marked at the end of the gorge (water supply works). However, it goes so steeply up the forest and is very slippery that you will fail with an e-bike. Unfortunately, there was no indication of how long the work will take.
-According to Schweizmobil, it is around 800 meters up, my Garmin came to just over 700.
Would only recommend it in the early morning or late afternoon.
recommend.
