Hochalp

The long and challenging tour to Hochalp rides through the heart of Toggenburg and, in addition to attractive trails, is particularly impressive thanks to the phenomenal scenery with the Säntis as a constant companion.

Description

From Neu St. Johann, ride along the young Thur to Krummenau and, a few meters after leaving the village, follow an asphalt road up the Wintersberg to Bendel. Continue northwards across the idyllic plateau on an asphalt road until a gravel path leads to the Fuchslöchern after Alp Chellen on the right. Now follow an alpine path up to the ridge, where a short singletrail on the right rides to Hemberg. The tour rides down to the Necker river on a road and then follows the long ascent to Hochalp. Over the Barenegg you climb up on a small asphalt road, which turns into a gravel path at the saddle and soon after continues upwards as a singletrail. We take this until we reach the asphalted alpine road to Hochalp and then follow it to the summit. Now a first-class but technically challenging singletrail rides towards Schwägalp. The trail descends slightly and also has a small uphill section at Spicher. As soon as you reach an asphalt road again, keep right over Alp Horn to Ellbogen. Here begins a rough path to the Schwägalp pass road. Follow this downhill for a few meters until you reach Rietbad, where an asphalt road branches off to the left. This takes you to Alp Heimetli, from where a challenging singletrail rides back to Nesslau.

Alternatives: Rietbad on the singletrail through the Schattenhalbriet

I rode the tour on 27.5.2023. All in all, a nice spring tour when there is still snow higher up. Not a trail wonder tour but still nice. Don't follow the GPX route up to Hochalp. The hiking trail no longer really exists. It is better to ride along the road or follow the signposted hiking trail along the ridge, mostly pushing. The descent from the Hochalp first follows a gravel path, then continues on beautiful singletrail sections along the altitude trail. The short pushing sections are well worth it. Preferably not during the alpine season because, as usual in Toggi, there are many fences that need to be opened and closed. :-)

Thanks for the insightful description @Baldi.

I rode this tour with colleagues on 17.06.2018. The trail at the beginning of the young Thur river already leads through a no-ride zone. If you do take the trail, you'll probably be shot under the law if there are a lot of hikers in Toggi. The ascent to the Hochalp is amazing in terms of panoramic views. The descent back down is then a big disappointment in terms of the tail. First, it's a steep 200-metre climb from the Hochalp along a concrete road towards the start of the trail. After that, it's mostly uphill on repeatedly unrideable ramps. The trail towards Spycher is no fun. From Spycher there is a 1000m long beautiful root trail and at Ellbogen a mountain hiking trail with 100hm technically fine and difficult hairpin bends. The rest is the usual forest highway. Once again a ride tour that doesn't match the descriptions. My colleagues were also pretty disappointed.
