Tanzboden

Far below the Tanzboden lies the upper Lake Zurich and behind it the Toggenburg with the Säntis. The single trail along the ridge is a classic for mountain bikers, but it's a tough one.

Description

The tour starts in Ebnat, from where you reach the Hinter Allmen alp via the Thurau district on an asphalt road through the Steintal valley. From here, the asphalt road turns into an increasingly steep gravel path that rides up to Tanzboden, 500 meters higher up. It's worth taking a break here for the beautiful views (to Lake Zurich and Toggenburg) and the excellent mountain inn. From Tanzboden, follow the flowing single trail along the mountain top to the striking Regelstein above Ricken. On the last few meters, the bike has to be pushed a few more meters. From Regelstein, take the technically demanding but increasingly flowing root trail through the Bannwald forest almost to the entrance to Ricken. You then stay on the right-hand side of the Rickentobel valley and return to Toggenburg on an asphalt road. Cycle along the Thur via Kappel back to Ebnat.

Ridden on 12.10.2024. Conditions: mega wet to partially dry. On the road with an old-school enduro bike.
In my opinion, the mountain inn at Tanzboden is definitely worth a stop and the view is also worth the effort of the ascent, provided the weather cooperates as it did today.
The connecting trail to the Regelstein is debatable. On the downhill, apart from a very rough section in the first third, everything was rideable for me today. If it had been dry there, I would have given it a try.
But the uphills are often really tough. Riding technique training per excellence - I probably had to capitulate three or four times here. You could probably do a bit more with an e-bike.
I found the descent from Regelstein very fun and enjoyable again. Here, deciduous and conifer-dominated areas alternate and where there are more conifers, the ground has absorbed the immense amounts of rain of the last few days well - it was even dry in places.
Tip for all those who want to return to the Lake Zurich region: After about 1/3 of the Regelstein descent, follow the signpost to "Rittmarren" (where you can also stop for refreshments again) and then follow a long and flowing trail to Gommiswald.
My conclusion: If you are mainly looking for pure downhill trail fun, I recommend riding directly up to the Regelstein. If you have some time, leisure and a desire for a personal challenge, you can ride the described tour via Tanzboden.

I rode the tour today (24.6.23). The ascent has already been described quite well. I could hardly find anything good about the downhill. The 'up and down' parts, which occur again and again, are just annoying and exhausting. The fact that you have to lift your MTB over a dozen or so extremely biker-unfriendly gates also disturbs the flow. Towards the end, before you have to make the final descent on the tarred road, there is a 4 km long, so-so trail. Over the total length of 28 km, this was not enough for me and personally not worth the one-hour journey. For locals, the conclusion would certainly be different :)

I rode the tour on 3.6.2023 in the best weather and dry conditions. Description fits quite well and the comments of my predecessors are still valid. The ascent is mostly in the forest and therefore easy to master even in hot, sunny weather. The last few meters really work your legs again, but with the friendly Alpbeizli in view, they are still manageable. While the ascent is suitable for every average (e-)biker, the second part should only be tackled by technically experienced cyclists. The descent, which is peppered with roots and rocky sections, requires a lot of concentration and technical skill and, of course, good (protective) equipment is a must. The numerous pasture boundaries (turnstiles, gates of all kinds) are a bit annoying and can only be mastered by dismounting. Nevertheless, the tour is definitely worthwhile, and not just because of the fantastic views.

Ridden on 22.05.2020. Uphill to Tanzboden, first a pleasant asphalt road and then a forest highway, the last 150-200 meters of altitude are quite steep but doable. Along the ridge there is a heavily washed-out, rooty path: This is not a built flow trail, but you have to choose your line carefully. Small, steep and heavily rooted climbs take a lot of energy, forcing me at least to push most of the time. As with all extremely rooty descents, mere mortals will have little or no fun in wet conditions, I would only ride it dry and above all only with decent rubber, because race or touring tires turn the descent into a forest hike for most bikers. The view is magnificent, the navigation very simple. All in all, a tour that you can do once, but apart from the view behind Tanzboden, unfortunately not really a highlight that you have to do.

Checked 2017

I rode the tour today. About 26 degrees, very wet conditions, foggy, parked at the train station (free!)
Komoot gives me the tour with !1220hm, 4h with breaks and refreshments, 30.1km, Bike YT Capra Race

I quote from the description: ... "From Tanzboden you follow the flowing single trail along the mountain top to the striking Regelstein above Ricken."

I must have taken a brutal wrong turn, otherwise I can't explain what I encountered. Firstly, the path goes into an official bike ban (locals said it wasn't a problem, yet it is a ban) and secondly, the path was extremely bombed (cows and weather I assume). Hub-deep bog holes, broken off parts of the path and holes hidden in the meadow. The 5 or 6 turnstiles/gates interrupt the ride if you are not already pushing because it goes steeply upwards between roots and swampy areas towards Regelstein.

The descent after the Regelstein is very good and even with the hundreds of slippery roots and mud it was really fun. However, there are many gullies carved out by the water that you should pay close attention to.

Overall, I would rate the riding technique one down and the fitness one up. Only do the tour if it is really! dry and you have no problem pushing the bike from time to time.

Ride on :-)
