Rifugio Bruto Carestiato – Direttissima

Rifugio Bruto Carestiato

There are several interesting trail combinations around Agordo, a small Italian town in the province of Belluno. The descent from Rifugio Bruto Carestiato is particularly appealing in terms of both scenery and trail difficulty.

Description

The route starts in Agordo. From there, you pedal steadily along the paved road, accompanied by breathtaking scenery, all the way up to Passo Duran. The pass is relatively unknown, which means traffic is lighter than on the other Dolomite passes. With a maximum gradient of 15 percent—which can be quite challenging—the route passes the Rifugio San Sebastiano and continues along a rough gravel path to the Bruto Carestiato mountain hut. This marks the highest point of the tour. The hut is picturesquely nestled on the south side of the Cresta delle Masenade rock formations and is the perfect spot for a break.

Then the descent begins. Via Sentiero 548 and subsequently Sentiero 547, the route—rated S2 in difficulty—leads directly back to the starting point. Winding constantly downhill, the trail passes through spruce and larch forests on forest floor as well as over limestone and gravel. The final sections are very smooth to ride before finally returning to the starting point on asphalt.
