Strada de la Vena (Cortina)
Description
A total of four lift transfers bridge a good 1000 meters in altitude. The fun "Tofalina" flow trail was recently built between the top station of the "Duca d'Aosta" chairlift and the bottom station of the Skyline cable car. The last chairlift takes us to the Rifugio Scoiattoli, a stone's throw from the famous Cinque Torri. From here, we pedal up to the Averau hut itself. We recommend taking a break in the hut - it serves delicious South Tyrolean cuisine.
After the hut, we head steeply downhill for a while on the ski slope (approx. 200 meters in altitude), then turn right onto a high alpine, partly exposed trail below the towers of the Averau massif. After crossing the gravel flanks and a steep, rocky descent, the trail leads across a meadow and soon enters the forest. After a few kilometers, we reach the ancient village of Larzonai, where the actual Strada de la Vena begins. From here, we roll along less exciting gravel paths to Colle Santa Lucia, from where we pedal uphill on asphalt towards Passo Giau. It is just under 800 vertical meters to the valley station of the Fedare chairlift, which takes us back up to the Averau hut.
From here, we first take the familiar ascent route back to the Rifugio Scoiattoli. We now leave the Cinque Torri on the left and continue to the Rifugio Cinque Torri. From here, we join a somewhat rough forest path. This is followed by constant ups and downs, eventually leading us down the finest enduro trails to Cortina.
Be careful: the trails in the forest are wild and sometimes difficult to recognize. In the small village of Pocol, we ride briefly on the main road and then - barely visible - have to turn left into the forest at a crash barrier. It's best to stick meticulously to the track, otherwise we'll quickly get lost.
