Passo di Giau – Lago Federa

Forcella di Giau (Cortina)

Lago Federa is one of the most popular photo subjects in the Cortina d'Ampezzo region. With the Passo Giau, it can be incorporated into a crisp and varied enduro tour.

Description

In Cortina d'Ampezzo, the first thing on the agenda is the ascent to Passo Giau. You can either simply follow the pass road or take the gravel road via Campo for the first section, which also joins the pass road a little higher up. From an altitude of around 1500 meters above sea level, there are no more alternatives and the remaining 700 meters in altitude have to be covered on the road (which can be quite busy in high season). At the top of the pass, the ascent is not yet complete, but you leave the crowds behind. You roll towards Forcella di Zonia on a promisingly flowing trail, but are soon forced to walk. The section up to Forcella di Giau can only be ridden in sections, and in the final section up to the pass, the bike has to be carried.

Now it's time for the descent back to Cortina. A fun and flowing path leads through a kind of plateau towards Forcella Ambrizzola. After an alpine hut, you have to push your bike a few more meters to get up to the Forcella on the path above. Fit mountain bikers master this final ascent by riding. From now on, it's singletrail fun down to Cortina. To do this, you roll down to the famous Lago Federa and then follow the 431 trail down to the next lake, Lago d'Ajal. There is a short section of gravel road to cover here, before taking the 428 trail back down to the first houses in Cortina.
