Paternsattel (Drei Zinnen)
Description
"Up to here and no further!" This is how you can describe the tour south of the Three Peaks at the Paternsattel and Col dei Mezzo. Because biking is prohibited in the Three Peaks region, but more on that later. We start at the Hotel Drei Zinnen Blick in Val di Landro. Passing Lake Dürrensee and the village of Schluderbach, the cycle path leads up towards Lake Misurina, where you gradually realize that the Three Peaks are a tourist magnet. Traffic is increasing, the shuttles are full and as a biker you get lost in the crowd. The point where you cross or pass the toll booth and can read the daily toll prices is a relief. Good, we're on the road by bike! The ascent to the Auronzo hut at 2320 meters above sea level is relatively steep but with plenty of space. Every meter you climb, you see more and more of this mighty mountain landscape and increasingly forget the crowds. The question arises again and again: can you bike here in peace, are the trails really there for you alone, will you be photographed by Chinese people or will you end up on a cover or in an Instagram story somewhere? First, you have to wind your way to the Lavaredo hut and the Paternsattel (from here, biking is prohibited!). This detour on the tour is highly recommended, as the ride along the Three Peaks offers an incredible backdrop and should definitely be done. Return along the same route to the Auronzo hut and continue along the 105 climb to the Forcella Col di Mezzo. From here you are almost alone and you will hardly meet another soul until you reach the Col di Mezzo. The panorama and the scenery become more and more impressive and the trail on route 103 offers everything an enduro rider could wish for, from S2 to S3 difficulty. Once you reach the Alm, continue along the 108 trail into the Rienz Valley and from there back to the Hotel Drei Zinnen Blick. The difficulty here can be declared at a maximum of S2, although attention must be paid to the exposed sections of the trail at the start of the Rienz Valley.
Conclusion: An all-round successful tour and, in view of the Three Peaks, recommended during the week or in the low season (e.g. in the fall). The trails are fabulous, the panorama indescribable and the cost-benefit ratio for uphill and downhill is worth an excellent rating.

"Unfortunately" I "overlooked" the "prohibition sign" and rode to the Paternsattel :-) The hikers were amazed and admired that someone was riding a bike there. At the Paternsattel, some workers at the hut told me that cycling is not allowed there. I promised them that I wouldn't ride :-P :-P
The road to the Auronzo hut to the Paternsattel is now prohibited. From our point of view, it's not worth it anyway, as you're far too close to the Three Peaks.
We rode towards Monte Campedelle (about halfway) and had a great view from there.
Otherwise, a good sightseeing tour. The descent can't be compared to the awesome trails we have in Switzerland. If you like to carry your bike down and don't want to make a pilgrimage to the Three Peaks like the masses in cars or buses, this is an alternative. The passage towards Col di Mezzo should be tackled with patience and rather late. There are a lot of hikers there, especially in high season.
Rode today. In my opinion, biking is not allowed from the Auronzo hut to the Paternsattel. blue pedestrian sign and general driving ban. we went on foot with all the other hikers. We were not alone at the Col di Mezzo but everyone was very friendly. Next time I would walk from there (definitely no biking) towards the 3 Zinnenhütte instead of the Paternsattel. The descent from Col di Mezzo was beautiful at the beginning, then came the hairpin bends and it goes down quite nicely. Once these are over, it's really fun up to the mountain pasture. Afterwards, initially as described, max. S2 with a few trees still in the way. Later you have to overcome a ravine where it really goes down. If you want to ride that, please. We enjoyed the tour from the panorama alone.
