Gantraste

Innichen mit Gantaraste und Haunold-Gipfel

The summit cross of the Gantraste can be seen high up towards Haunold from the village of Innichen. The viewpoint is the destination of the tour, which you have to earn hard - but which offers a great singletrail descent.

Description

From the town center of San Candido, you warm up on the cycle path to Dobbiaco. Warming up is the right keyword, because from there it's a steep climb up the mountain. The gravel road up to the Eisler Kaser is an unparalleled calf-biter. If you're not on an e-mountain bike, you'll want nothing more than one on this section. A good 500 meters of elevation gain accumulate in this way until just after the Eisler Kaser. From then on, a fun intermediate section begins: a wonderfully flowing single trail nestles almost flat into the steep terrain. This section is a highlight that should be enjoyed. Because immediately after the path later turns into a gravel road, the ascent up to the Gantraste summit begins. 400 meters uphill on a trail. Anyone who was previously happy about the e-mountainbike will now wish they had a lightweight organic bike for this pushing section. Although the pushing aid eases the strain a little, the climb is a cramp everywhere (with and without additional weight). Finally, the summit is reached right at the foot of the rocks of the Hundold massif. In the background the rocky landscape, at our feet the lovely Pustertal valley. The Gantaraste is a fascinating spot on earth!

The descent begins and it becomes clear why we are lugging a bike up the mountain. The descent is crisp for the first few meters, but then becomes smooth, if not easy. But a small highlight if you like alpine trails! The trail leads through the steep forest terrain back to the Maier Kaser, where the pushing section started. Just below the Kaser, the trail continues and leads (rough in places) down to the mountain station of the Monte Baranci chairlift. We escape the hustle and bustle up here on the next trail, which begins just below the meadows and rides down to the center of San Candido in excellent flow style.
