Marchkinkele Panorama-Route

Innichen Mountainbiken

The Marchkinkele towers far above the Hochpustertal valley and has long been a well-known classic among mountain bikers. In combination with the Sillian cable cars, the mountain becomes a great nature and trail experience.

Description

The starting point up to Marchkinkele is Toblach. Instead of climbing up from here through the Silvestertal valley as usual, you take the train to Innichen, change trains there to Sillian and finally board the Thurntaler cable car. The tour starts at the mountain station, almost exactly 1000 meters above the valley floor. You circle the Thurntaler on a gravel road and reach the wonderfully idyllic Thurntaler plateau. The view across to the rocky peaks of the Dolomites is fantastic: the peaks of the Three Peaks region to the right, then the Fanes region to the right and Kronplatz far off on the horizon. The panorama from up here is overwhelming. On the bike you climb up to Hochrast. The last part leads over a steep meadow path. If you don't have the genes of Popeye or an electric drive on your bottom bracket, you will have to push your bike up a few sections here. But the suffering soon comes to an end: a short section of trail leads down to the gravel road that leads up to Marchkinkele just below the ridge. Don't forget: Keep looking to the left for the stunning panorama.

The Marchkinkele is the culmination point of the tour. The single trail (trail no. 1) through the Blankental valley starts right at the crossing. The trail is an excellent mountain bike route, alpine, agile, varied and flowing, albeit challenging at times. In this way you reach the Steinberg Alm, which offers refreshments, and from there, after a short stretch of gravel road, the Silverster Alm, which also offers refreshments. A section now leads back along the ascent route, but then you ride straight ahead at the junction and finally reach the Innicher Eck - the starting point of the great final descent on super flowy trails down to the outskirts of Dobbiaco. Conclusion: A really worthwhile alternative to the classic and well-known Marchkinkele tour.

Note: The gondola lift from Sillian is only in operation from the beginning of July to the beginning of September, be sure to check operating times. Outside of operating hours, the entire ascent has to be made under your own steam, but at least it leads along a well-maintained asphalt and later gravel road.

Also a really nice tour in the area! We (my son and I) really enjoyed it! The panorama is wonderful and so are the trails. We can confirm T. Schaeffer's comment.

We rode the tour on 14.07.2023. Very nice tour, great high alpine trail up to the Steinberg Alm. However: after the Innicher Eck we had searched in vain for the "super flowy downhill trail" -> The trail of the track from the ride website no longer exists for the most part. Entrances overgrown, trail littered with felled trees which seem to have been there for a long time and have obviously been left lying around. So we had to descend more or less on the wide gravel road to Toblach, which in the end left us with a mixed impression of this tour. Perhaps someone will find a better descent with local mountain bikers or by trial and error.

In the fall of 2020, driving was prohibited eastbound at Marchkinkele.

This is correct, but not in the opposite direction (summer 2021) as on this tour. In addition, you are on a wide gravel road on this section - the purpose of this prohibition sign is not obvious to anyone who is not familiar with it.
